tomb Raider is a brilliant game on the XBox 360 and the developers have successfully rebooted the franchise for the 21st century with next-generation graphics and gameplay. Best of all, the developers pay homage to the original game that started it all but flesh out the character of Lara Croft to create this almost life-like person that you can really relate to. I for one hope that Crystal Dynamics will continue to build other Tomb Raider games with their new Crystal Engine as this game was brilliantly good and extremely fun to play!

With a well written cast of characters, mightily impressive production techniques, sumptuous visuals, tight platforming and surprisingly enjoyable combat, Tomb Raider is most definitely a release to be treasured.

The island’s other residents aren’t happy to have you poking around, so you’ll have to fight your way through them as you search your surroundings. The combat is straightforward and enjoyable, but a bit at odds with the narrative of the game. Lara goes from apologizing to a deer for killing it to sniping cultists with barely a blink. The game wouldn’t be much fun if she were a terrible shot, but she handles a rifle better than most soldiers and is totally unflustered by setting people on fire. Even taking into consideration her determination to save her friends at any cost and her reluctant admission that killing was easier than she’d expected, the difference between Lara’s demeanor in combat and in the cut scenes can be jarring at times.

It’s pretty clear that Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics mean business with Tomb Raider. No one in their right mind would spend the kind of time and money making a game like this as a one-off, and the game’s ending, too, hints at things to come. That’s no bad thing in my book; if the sequels are anything like as good as this, I’m all in.

The lackluster multiplayer is absolutely no reason to avoid what is otherwise one of the best action adventures I’ve ever played. Crystal Dynamics has nailed a pitch-perfect new vision for one of gaming’s most recognizable characters, and revitalizes her for what I hope will be many more installments. Whether or not you’ve embraced the previous games that went by this moniker, this is the time to take another look at Lara Croft.

Tomb Raider is not just a reboot, but a revelation in a series that had long passed its prime. With cinematic camera angles, beautiful environments and the lack of a HUD, it’s visually ravishing throughout its meaty campaign. Add to that an engaging storyline plus inventive gameplay mechanics and this is not only the strongest Tomb Raider this generation, but also one of the best adventure games period. Even though archery is useless and combat can feel repetitive, the realism and grit of the experience make it hard to put the controller down. An open world, thousands of collectibles and enjoyable online multiplayer, however, make that notion near impossible. With the next console generation just around the corner, imagine what’s in store for us next if something this astounding can be done on seven-year old hardware.

Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix had an undeniably heavy burden in modernizing a character born from an immature, male-oriented fantasy, but no matter your gender, if you’re a gamer, you should play Tomb Raider. It combines high-levels of interactivity, excellent pacing, and a true bond between the player and the character on screen. The game might ask you to suspend your disbelief from time to time, but at least it’s not for Lara’s measurements.

Tomb Raider is an outright classic game franchise. From dubious beginnings by way of oversized polygonal chests, it presented a comfortable balance between challenging puzzles and visceral violence. After getting lost in the forest the franchise now comes full circle – this younger Lara is arguably a more mature representation of the character, and I’m more than hungry for the sequel.

Tomb Raider reaffirms the importance and value of having strong, realistic female protagonists in games, while also successfully transposing much of what people loved about the original titles into an adventure that feels superbly modern. It’s a better Uncharted game than Uncharted 3 was, and goes a long way towards reminding us of the value of the Triple-A blockbuster in a market where smaller indie efforts have started to get so good that we need such reminders. This is an extremely impressive reboot, one that provides me with one of the most enjoyable and exciting adventures I’ve undertaken in quite some time.

Even if you’ve never been a huge fan of Lara Croft’s fortune-hunting adventures, Tomb Raider is sure to impress. Its expert sense of pacing, captivating setting, and dark tone create a truly memorable experience that’s further enhanced by an immense level of detail. Lara Croft, the old Lara Croft, is dead. In place of a dolled-up gunslinger is a do-what-it-takes survivor–and we hope she hasn’t had her fill of adventuring just yet.

If Tomb Raider’s gameplay emphasizes freedom, the storytelling works through restraint. It’s not nearly as focused on realism as it pretends at first, but later supernatural elements form a creepy tonal undercurrent rather than an overwhelming narrative wave. Cutscenes are few and rarely run longer than a minute. Tomb Raider builds slowly through discovered diary entries, buried relics and environmental observations. It’s subtle and thoughtful in a way I didn’t expect.
