So what about the difficulty and length of this game? While I don’t like counting the ‘extra content’ because that really is dictated by your interest, the campaigns take about 6-10 hours a piece. Three campaigns (and maybe an unlockable that I’m not mentioning) equals out to quite an adventure. Of course, this all depends on how difficult you want to make this game. If you make it easy then you’re going to hit the 6-10 hour mark without a hitch. If you increase the difficulty then you’ll get more resistance that will require more strategy on your part, which means more hours overall. For me, I felt like the amount of time Resident Evil 6 takes to complete is appropriate. Like a good BBC show that knows when to end, the story lasts as long as it needs to last. It doesn’t feel stretched out in any way, despite the final boss fight in Leon’s mission, which felt like it took forever (but it was fun anyway

Over the years, the tone of the Resident Evil series has morphed from a George Romero horror flick to Michael Bay summer blockbuster. That metamorphosis into insane action is front and center in Resident Evil 6, and bringing a buddy along for the chaos is great fun. The game’s minor flaws don’t hold back the decadent experience from being an unhinged, flaming rollercoaster ride.

What all the sections share in common is the same theme that runs through Resident Evil 6 – this is a brilliant action game, marred only by rough patches where Capcom attempts ideas that don’t quite work. It’s not the best Resident Evil game but what game could be after Resident Evil 4? Instead, this is arguably the best co-op game available on PlayStation 3 alongside Borderlands 2 and while long-term Resident Evil fans might still be disappointed by nod towards action over horror, Capcom finally has the confidence and know how to pull it off. It’s big, it’s brutal, it’s ballsy and most of all, it’s back.

In that sense, Mercs is Resi 6 writ large: a game built on old foundations. It’s not a progressive title at all, but then it isn’t intended to be. Capcom’s intentions are simple: to move Resi into the mainstream action zone, and give players as much bang as possible for their buck. It is an unsophisticated experience. If you want to be terrified, or use your brain, Resi 6 isn’t the game. But if you just want to spray monster brains all over the place, while occasionally cooing at some gorgeous scenery, Resi 6 delivers in several spades.

Resident Evil 6 is a crazy amalgam. It’s a mixture of great and mediocre elements that are so glaringly obvious that the observant veteran gamer can tick off each point within an hour of playing. The scripted events have some problems, sudden deaths can get really taxing, the branching story could’ve been better presented, and the control isn’t fluid enough. Then you’ve got the flashy, in-your-face, and – dare I say it – memorable moments that almost don’t seem to fit. It’s just an insane rollercoaster ride chock full of ecstatic highs and depressing lows. The highs win, but only because it’s fun to watch that desperate boxer go nuts in the ring.

Despite the incredible amount of effort and manpower that went into making this game, it unfortunately falls short of being the definitive RE experience Capcom had set out to offer. Whether it’s the convoluted mechanics, wonky controls, uneven presentation, or its obsession with Quick Time Events and action setpieces, the game is bound to leave certain fans wanting more. Nostalgic Resident Evil fans may find it worthwhile to try out this chapter, if only to reunite with some of their favorite characters and follow the engaging storyline, but it’d be hard to recommend it to those who prefer the old-school Survival Horror mechanics from the classic games in the series. Overall, after playing this game, it may appear that the Resident Evil franchise has lost its way, as it struggles to find its own identity. Thankfully, the sheer value of the package and the amount of content offered ensure that the game offers plenty of memorable, fun moments. Some may feel like the score I’m giving is high compared to the amount of problems I have with the game, but quality should always prevail over quantity. Fortunately, the good parts this title offers make it all worthwhile. Despite the amount of issues, I had a great time with Resident Evil 6. At the end of the day, that’s what matters the most.

Resident Evil 6 steers Capcom’s survival-horror series in an even more action-oriented direction – and comes up short in some places as a result. However, if you can forgive the troublesome camera and woeful partner AI, there’s still a lot to like about this third-person shooter.

Resident Evil 6 is a conflicted game that offers a fun but flawed core experience punctuated by some outstanding moments of action and suspense, along with a host of questionable design choices that often hobble what can be (and often is) an otherwise enjoyable game. It’s a flawed game that is certainly not without its obvious downfalls, but it’s also an ambitious and sprawling product, one that offers you a lot to chew on between its awesomely rank monsters, tense mood, ridiculous story and sights to see. While it can’t hope to surpass the series’ various high water marks, it doesn’t come close to plumbing further than its most foul depths, either. Not by a long shot. What’s left is a polarizing, decent action game with a distinct style and flair you can’t get outside of its namesake. It’s long, it’s grandiose, and it’s mostly a good time; Resident Evil 6 is an oddity worth examining for the fans and for the patient.
