There’s only so much I can say about how engaging and revolutionary a title is in one review. So, let’s recap what’s available in this delicious package. For £39.99, you’ll receive: a tale of courage and choice, interwoven with dark political secrets and intrigue, breathtaking visuals, a refined and strategic combat system that should be a genre standard, and an interesting endgame that essentially never ends. Yes, while the last part should be fairly intriguing to most, I won’t spill the beans. Just know that there lies a threat even more deadly and unforgiving than the game’s ‘final’ boss.

Overall, the game has a few minor flaws, but these flaws are outweighed by the amazing gameplay and intense moments the game provides. I would recommend this game to anyone who wants a fun, yet challenging and difficult game. The game’s difficulty and steep learning curve for traveling might turn off the more casual gamer however. Those who love mythology and have always wanted to fight some powerful mythical creatures and those who player Dungeons and Dragons and enjoyed it will find quite the gem in Dragon’s Dogma.

The character design process actually begins right after the prologue, itself offering plenty of freedom but also a fair sense of believability. Shaping every facial feature to your exact specifications is part of the process, and it’s a nice blend of Japanese and Western templates—not over-the-top in the hairdo department but maintaining a softness in the overall structure. Your physical build actually factors into your in-game control. Rather than classes or statistics dictating your movements, choosing to make an eight-foot-tall, three hundred pound warrior will give you a longer reach with your weapon, but keep your pace sluggish. On the flipside, a lean and lithe choice means quicker actions, but at the cost of being more easily weighed down with a loaded backpack.

If you’re deciding between getting the game on PS3 or Xbox 360, just know that both versions have their ups and downs. The Xbox 360 version usually maintains a smoother framerate where the PS3 version’s framerate seems jittery at times. The Xbox 360 version has screen tearing that is not in the PS3 version. Both versions have a problem with a skipping framerate after the game is played for a long period of time. Resetting your console will get rid of the problem, but it will often come back after a few hours. Dragon’s Dogma also includes early access to the Resident Evil 6 demo on both consoles, but the game is much more than a early access demo vessel. If you’re a fan of RPGs or Capcom action games, Dragon’s Dogma is definitely worth a look.

Dragon’s Dogma is an unconventional game for Capcom, and action/RPGs in general. Combat feels like a necessary part of the game’s design, rather than something that was begrudgingly added to provide interaction between cutscenes. I left the game feeling that I made my mark on Gransys the way I chose to, instead of being escorted from plot point to plot point. When you’re talking about an open-world game, I can’t think of higher praise.

The sound is another mixed bag but again, I’m going to take a more positive approach. I liked a lot of the voice work and although I’m not typically a fan of Japanese rock, I think such tracks were used with great effectiveness here. In fact, I don’t think those kick-ass beats were used enough; too often, a more generic orchestral score accompanies our questing. That being said, the balance of the audio is decent, and both the soundtrack and robust sound effects enhance every intense encounter. There may be a fair amount of subjectivity involved but chances are, you’ll dig what your speakers are presenting.

The wide expertise of the development team has shown through, and it’s very easy to see the appeal of Dragon’s Dogma to many sections of the RPG fan base. There are areas for improvement, most notably on the storytelling front, but Capcom has produced a thoroughly entertaining adventure with widespread charm. With the world outside Gransys yet to be explored, Capcom has the option of further diving into Dragon’s Dogma’s world and, based on this initial very solid outing, taking that option would be a most welcome decision.

The battle system is complemented by what you fight against and who you fight with. Tackling the game’s huge monsters is a pleasure, especially when coupled with the game’s Pawn system. Dragon’s Dogma is another excellent action adventure release, and further proof that the fantasy video game genre is on fire.

Dragon’s Dogma is a real success for Capcom — consistently entertaining and compelling, it’s a pleasure to explore its world. The pawn system and variety of skills and vocations keeps combat enjoyable even after dozens of hours, and while multiplayer would have been the icing on the cake, there’s more than enough here to entertain a single player for weeks. A solid and worthwhile purchase.

Both the protagonist and the main pawn are levelled up in the same manner through pretty typical RPG skill progression. The rock-paper-scissors of different magic types and weaknesses is present here, and while three of the core archetypal RPG ‘classes’ are present progression is open-ended enough that you’re not going to trap yourself in a dead-end skill set.

But those are minor gripes in the grand RPG scheme of things, and Dragon’s Dogma has everything that RPG-heads crave – you can lose yourself in tinkering around, collecting items, finding arcane quests and seeking random enemies for days. It’s reassuringly complex, and astonishingly well-executed given that this is Capcom’s first attempt at such a game.

That said, those of you with thick skin who like a good challenge will probably be able to overlook some of the flaws that a more impatient gamer like myself are quite sensitive to. Dragon’s Dogma serves up a role-playing experience that was designed for those truly loyal to the genre in its purest form. The gameplay is great and the unique Pawn system makes you feel like you’re playing with others even though it’s a single player experience. The world of Gransys is massive and will keep you busy for many, many hours. If you’re looking for an experience that will last you quite a while and don’t need a compelling story to keep you coming back for more, then Dragon’s Dogma is right up your alley.

The combat though, for the most part, is a highlight of the game. Utilising a variety of classes and skills you have a wide range of abilities open to you and your companions mapped to the face and shoulder buttons. The lack of a lock on frustrates but the feel of combat is sturdy and rewarding, the option to let you quickly and easily change up your character class (and to unlock hybrid classes later on) helps keep the game fresh. I changed my character a few times through the game and working out the best play styles for each class was always interesting.

Taking on these mythical beasts is an exhilarating experience and each one has their own individual traits to learn and overcome. It’s something Capcom should get a huge pat on the back for. Whilst these battles aren’t flawless, the positives far outweigh the negatives.

There’s so much to like about what Capcom gets right with Dragon’s Dogma that it makes the missteps utterly heartbreaking. The combat has enough depth and variety to keep you interested for the duration of the story and beyond, but in terms of what might have been, what should have been, Dragon’s Dogma falls gut-wrenchingly short.
