gamefocus.ca review
Future Soldier finds the perfect balance between the classic tactical shooter experience and the more modern high-octane approach that today’s gamers crave. It shouldn’t alienate long-term Ghost Recon fans, while also allowing newcomers to jump in. With slick visuals, a ton of great content, a robust single player experience, and strong multiplayer components, GR:FS marks a glorious return for Ubisoft’s franchise.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Future Soldier is an impressive return to a series that has been gone for far too long. While many shooters encourage you to lone wolf-it through an entire game, here you come to rely heavily on your squad to see you through, which is a mechanic that is missing from games like this all too often. It’s good to see the “squad†put back into squad-based gameplay. The game supports custom squads that you can assemble and name on your own, so if you pick this up, quickly populate one with your own Ghost team.

Future Soldier’s campaign does lose its stealthy way a bit right at the end, and the presentation can be rough at times, just like the throwaway plot. Ultimately, though, the game shines not only for staying true to Ghost Recon’s roots, but also for doing so while successfully balancing the memories of old fans with the modern expectations of new ones.

Whether you’re looking to play online with your friends or simply want a lengthy, entertaining military campaign, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is easy to recommend. It’s one of the best military shooters I’ve played. It doesn’t push the boundaries of what we expect from that genre, but Future Soldier takes an approach that leaves little room for stagnant gameplay or retreading ground.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier is the type of title that might be easy to overlook if you’re not partial to the franchise, or even if you are tired of warfare in post-modern times, but it’s a great title nonetheless. Between the impressive campaign, the myriad of co-op options and the added replayability of the mission challenges, as well as the expansive multiplayer component, it’s as solid a package as military shooters provide.

In the end it’s a solid game that Ghost Recon fans can sink into the game and enjoy, the multiplayer action is well worth the price of admission. The single player experience juggles so many different elements; one’s opinion may conclude that the designers tried too hard to include several different types of gamers. The action between stealth and full on fire fights is understandable, because that’s just how it is in real-life and it would be boring as hell to just have a military based game with nothing but stealth and no gun play. Some of it seems forced at times and that may be what takes just enough away from making this a perfect game. I like the mix though; this is a worthy addition to the Ghost Recon Franchise. See you on the battle field.

I would be remiss if I didn’t talk about the presentation. Mainly because it’s awesome. The in game character models are very good and highly detailed. For example, you can distinctly identify what each team member has as their weapons and how they’ve customized them, even during the pseudo cut scenes. Awesome design. Character movement is also phenomenal. 2,500 animations are promised for Future Soldier, which creates the illusion of seamless movement that a real person would enact moving from place to place. The environments were just as rigorously created. Each area of the world looks like what it is intended to be, and everything just looks very "natural." And interaction between character and environment is flawless. But if the game looks good, it sounds even better! Never have my a40s sounded this incredible playing a game. Some titles come across as just being "loud" with no observation of space or direction. But despite many things causing "racket," I felt like all sounds existed in a certain, individual "place." Yet another tip of the hat to Ubisoft. You may have made us wait for this entry, but clearly, it was well worth it.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier may not be the sexiest game in the world with some graphical inconsistencies particularly in the cut-scenes and backgrounds, but she handles like a goddamned dream. Friendly AI has totally got your back making it an engaging experience in any mode. The multiplayer offers a solid balance of familiar game modes and a few tasty new treats and Guerilla mode is packed to the hilt with over-the-top frenzied action. Ghost Recon: Future Soldier may not be the prettiest girl on the block, but she’s got one hell of a magnetic personality.

Future Soldier could have ended up a real mess – and some hardcore Ghost Recon fans may still think it is – but the majority of players will find a really engaging game in both single and multiplayer. Ubisoft has managed to simplify some of the tactical aspects of the series and unite them with a broader action focus.

Is Future Soldier worth it? Yes, easily. There’s a great deal of content here for the money, and a set of high-level weapon unlocks, combined with challenges to complete on every mission, should keep you coming back to the single-player or co-op games as to the online versus modes. Dismal story aside, this is a solid, professional, deeply enjoyable product. Like the Ghosts themselves, it’s so good at what it does that you run the real risk of not noticing how superbly it’s doing it.

The gameplay as a whole works out really well, as you work alongside your team to guarantee success. Being able to “tag†groups of enemies is well done here, and your killing efforts aren’t without merits. What’s more, you can switch between a third-person zoom and a first-person scope at any time, though switching back to your cover situation might be a little confusing at first. Just pick a favorite and go with it.

Despite its bugs and some awkward presentation issues, Future Soldier, as a whole, isn’t a bad game. It ticks all the boxes you’d expect a modern-day shooter to have and achieves most of them with a workmanlike quality that might make for a solid rental if the game didn’t utilize an online pass for multiplayer access. But if you’re looking for something that throws back to the days when the Tom Clancy name on a box actually meant that something unique was inside, Future Soldier comes up short.
