The solo campaign offers around 10 hours of gameplay, and can be played co-operatively online to pad it out further. A selection of multiplayer modes provides further mileage, along with some unique twists on the military shooter formula. Overwatch mode is the standout offering, casting one player in the role of a sniper providing support for a ground level companion as they complete a range of objectives.

The cheap price point and a tightly focused delivery work in Sniper Elite V2’s favour. This isn’t the kind of game that you’ll return to once completed, but as something a little different to the usual shooter formula it offers surprising satisfaction. The X-ray damage mechanic never gets old and some of the levels are actually quite exciting to snipe through. Perfectionists will enjoy the challenge of completing missions with zero guard awareness, while the rest of us will giggle with inappropriate pleasure as our bullets repeatedly perforate hearts, lungs, eye sockets and balls.

When the dust settles on Sniper Elite V2 though, it’ll likely be remembered for those X-Ray kill animations and little else of note. Your level of enjoyment will be almost directly mapped to how entertaining you find the visual spectacle to be, and – for me at least – it was perfectly good fun in short bursts. Not the best shooter of the year by a long stretch then, but certainly nowhere near the bottom of the pile.

The rest of Sniper Elite V2 can also be quite intense when everything is clicking into place. Lining up good shots and laying low dozens of foes is a lot of fun, though it can get tiresome to fight your way through yet another area newly populated with thick-headed rifle fodder. Your tolerance for transparently game-y elements will go a long way toward determining how much you enjoy this glorified shooting gallery, but if you relish a good headshot, Sniper Elite V2 has got you covered.

It’s too bad that everything outside of the sniping is so mediocre. It makes Sniper Elite V2 the kind of experience that’s best recommended to the player that prefers the sniping in a Battlefield game over that of a Call of Duty because it’s more realistic. There’s a tremendous focus on taking the act of sniping and holding it for all its worth. For everyone else they’ll find a mediocre shooter on a battlefield that was old and worn years ago.

That’s one impressive kill cam! The TSA should use this technology to see if people are attempting to smuggle bullets onto planes inside their faces. What’s the best sniping game you’ve ever played?
