Sledgehammer: Third Person Call of Duty Likely Cancelled

October 19, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

Sledgehammer has no plans to continue working on the third person Call of Duty game.

Sledgehammer Games’ Glen Schofield says that after the studio’s work on Modern Warfare is done, they’ll likely cancel their previous effort—a third-person Call of Duty.

The studio announced it was working on a third person Call of Duty title in 2010 when they joined forces with Activision. Sledgehammer has since put the game on hold to co-develop Modern Warfare 3 with the remnants of Infinity Ward who stayed behind at Activision following the departure of studio heads Jason West and Vince Zampella.

“We’ll probably cancel it,” said Schofield in an interview with CVG. “They gave us a choice of: do you want to work on Modern Warfare 3, or do you want to continue working on this? And we really liked that,” he said of Activision.

“We liked what we were doing. It third person, probably set at a time that might have niched it too much. I bet that if we had kept going, within a month or two I probably would have switched the time period, but kept the gameplay. It had some really cool stuff.”

“This game has allowed both Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games to hire, and we hired really strong teams, both of us. We needed to come together on this one, but since we’ve both grown, we’re both over 100 people now,” he said.

“Initially we weren’t fully functional because we had to learn a new engine. Now we have, I think the best thing that could happen for Activision would be for us to both go off and make our own game. Whether that’s a Call of Duty game or not is up in the air. I plan on working on Call of Duty.”

It’s hard to blame them when they are giving exactly what the fanbase wants—no change at all. God forbid they do something new with the franchise.
