The game starts right after the cliffhanger ending of Modern Warfare 2 with US forces struggling to cope with a surprise Russian attack. The player will travel the world in the single player campaign with plenty of intermediate roles as SAS operative, tank gunner and more.

It’s hard to believe Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 has finally arrived let alone lived up to all the hype surrounding it. Without starting a console war, the PS3 version lacks a bit of overall graphical polish, the load times were a bit longer, the squishy DualShock 3 triggers aren’t as responsive, and the online community just doesn’t seem to match up to what I’ve seen on the Xbox 360. But if the PS3 is your chosen system then by all means, GET THIS GAME! Modern Warfare 3 is perfection when it comes to story and gameplay, and it’s only going to get better as more DLC arrives and the game is refined and balanced as the designers analyze real-time data from all the matches being played. There is no fan base more loyal than Call of Duty, and this game is guaranteed to delight all who play now and in the years to come.

Outside of new games for MP, you also get new perks and a wonderful thing called Strike Packages. Starting with the perks, you get a variety of new ways to play in MW3. You can gain perks like Blind Eye, Quick Draw and marksman that help you customize particular classes to perform in certain situations. Blind Eye gives you the ability to be undetectable from air support and sentries (you’ll want this). Quickdraw allows for fast, not better, aiming. Marksman helps you to identify enemies from a longer range, which is going to make snipers of CoD happy, happy, happy. Having the ability to add and subtract perks and customize your soldier for certain maps and situations is invaluable.

TP: Although some elements of the game gives us both déjà vu, I can’t help but acknowledge that each mode entertains us. Gamers that have played previous COD iterations can expect to be familiarized with how each mode works while also receiving moments of, "Oh hey, that’s new." It’s a solid addition to the Call of Duty family, and I’m glad to say the multiplayer remains addicting and is more balanced than ever.

Graphically, Modern Warfare 3 is pretty stale, and looks pretty close to what Modern Warfare 2 looked like. However, at a healthy constant rate of 60 FPS, the game looks good in motion. You won’t stop moving and take in any gorgeous scenery, or examine anything particular, which is a little disappointing. There is enough going on at all times to stimulate you visually, but it could look better.

When it comes down to it, Modern Warfare 3 meets expectations. The core elements of multiplayer and the campaign remain fundamentally unchanged, but the game serves as a great example of how many subtle tweaks can add up to an improved overall product. Even with the recent turmoil at Infinity Ward, the remnants of that team (in conjunction with Sledgehammer) have put together a worthy sequel to one of the most successful franchises of all time.

Here’s the deal with the Modern Warfare 3 campaign: It absolutely sells out to be the most over-the-top story you can imagine, combining plot points of every summer Jerry Bruckheimer/Michael Bay blockbuster film, especially in the first half of the game where you will constantly find yourself in the midst of non-stop precarious situations. You know how in the Rocky movies there are more punches thrown in one round than you would ever see thrown in an entire 15 round fight in real life? You will kill more bad guys in the first mission of the game (or any mission really) than any soldier would ever kill in a reel war. Don’t look at that as a knock on the game though… who wants to trudge through boring crap like Operation Flashpoint when they could hop all over the globe into situations with no down-time at all? Sure, the whole thing was ridiculous, but I had a blast every minute of the approximately 6 hours it took to play through the campaign.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 is full of deep, engaging multiplayer and campaign military shooter gaming, so it’s easy to recommend. It’s the sort of game a dedicated genre fan can regularly play for a couple of years. There are as many arguments that can be made for tight storytelling with lots of action as can be made against short campaigns. To a large extent, MW3’s multiplayer is more of the same that people loved about Modern Warfare 2. I’m all for wildly innovative gameplay mechanics underpinning sophisticated narrative elements, but there’s nothing wrong with giving the people what they want, either.

Spec Ops adds some variety, too, and in the end, it all comes back to the multiplayer, which is stellar. No two ways about it. So love it, hate it, feel indifferent, whatever…MW3 does what’s expected of it and always tries to jack our heart rates. Take it for what it is.

Bringing Sledgehammer Games on-board to help with the single-player component post-West/Zampellagate clearly hasn’t diluted the overall vision either – without the Sledgehammer names on the credits, you’d just as easily assume that it was business as usual.

Infinity Ward has always specialised in making the first-person perspective move and react to in-game events – whether through its peerless use of blur and focus, or by putting you up close and personal in a brutal fistfight – and in MW3 you once again see things you won’t believe.

For most however the lure of Multiplayer means that they’ll probably never touch the campaign, and for good reason: Call of Duty online is still the most fun you can have in the shortest amount of time online, pornography aside. Totally different to Battlefield yet equally as brilliant, Modern Warfare 3 has stuck to its guns and come out shooting. Or something.
