In Battlefield 3, players step into the role of the elite U.S. Marines. As the first boots on the ground, players will experience heart-pounding missions across diverse locations including Paris, Tehran and New York. As a U.S. Marine in the field, periods of tension and anticipation are punctuated by moments of complete chaos. As bullets whiz by, as walls crumble, as explosions force players to the ground, the battlefield feels more alive and interactive than ever before.

While Battlefield 3’s single player campaign is good yet a little bit too restrictive and linear, it’s the multiplayer department where the game really shines and beats all its competition.

Battlefield fans hoping for the most polished entry in the series won’t be disappointed by this massive sequel. Multiplayer maintains the high level of quality DICE is known for, and the campaign is the best in franchise history. Outside of a tacked-on, uninspired co-op mode consisting of six short standalone missions, the only downsides to the console version of Battlefield 3 are the lack of substantial changes to the multiplayer formula and 64-player matches. However, that shouldn’t stop longtime fans and newcomers from enjoying one of the best FPS experiences in gaming.

Battlefield 3 has arrived and – despite all of the hype – I’m not disappointed. Although the campaign mode is flatter than an anorexic stingray, the multiplayer is easily worth the price of admission alone.

Taken as individual pieces, only Battlefield 3’s regular multiplayer is really strong.
The co-op and story are both perfectly well executed, but lack true greatness. So, that third elephant: is Battlefield 3 really better than Call of Duty? It’s a matter of personal taste, but for us Battlefield 3’s incredible multiplayer edges this ahead of it’s accomplished rival.

Unfortunately, the campaign makes a habit of trading any sense of on-the-ground, moment-to-moment improvisation for unconvincing action-movie theatricality. Close-quarters confrontations devolve into limp button-tapping prompts, and it often seems like you spend far more time sprinting around while dramatic music thumps than actually fighting. More distressingly, there’s little practical use of the series’ famous destructible cover, despite occasional flanking opportunities and later missions that briefly put you in more open ground, Crumbling concrete and falling trees impart some sense of realism, but they rarely have any impact on your tactical choices.

As far as the constant comparisons to Call of Duty, well, I am guilty of making quite a few right here in this review, but if there’s room for three corporations to spend (and make) many billions of dollars each on their own game consoles, there’s room for two FPS juggernauts to both thrive simultaneously. There are differences, and on many points Activision’s baby will be the better game, but for my money Battlefield 3 has a longer-lasting online mode with more mature players, better teamwork, and the best visuals that my PC can render. I don’t know if DICE really expected to be the best of all worlds with this game – because they aren’t – but even with their signature lackadaisical view of bugs and issues, they nailed the one thing that really mattered to old-school Battlefield fans: playing together online.

When you shut down Battlefield 3 and let the Frostbite 2-powered dust settle, it certainly has some problems. But DICE’s adoration of and expertise with the online experience permeates every aspect of its multiplayer. Regardless of the narrative missteps or the occasional glitches, Battlefield 3 offers an unforgettable, world-class multiplayer suite so fun that it more than makes up for the package’s shortcomings.

The lighting I must admit is easily Battlefield 3’s strongest suit in visual quality. The vertical rays reflected off many light sources seemed to be more common than I have ever noticed in real life, but for the most part the rays, refractions, beams, and bloom effects are all expertly well done and certainly worth commending. Before even starting the game, it’s recommended you not only download the texture pack but also the day one update over Xbox Live which includes about 167 MB worth of patches. The game by no means looks bad. It certainly keeps up with the technology today and while it is still remniscent of Battlefield: Bad Company 2 in some aspects, DICE seemed to up the ante with more photo-realism and less of the almost cartoonish style found in the Bad Company series. If you thought Bad Company 2 looked impressive, then prepare to be most pleased with Battlefield 3. Smoke and particle effects are also quite awe-inspiring, and I have to suggest looking at the clouds during the campaign’s jet tutorial (where you act as a co-pilot rather than flying yourself, by the way). The Xbox 360 may not be capable of producing the jaw dropping visuals found on a high end PC, but with the texture pack installed there is little to complain about.

I discussed the single player campaign in my review of the PC version, and my critiques still stand: It’s a competent, but disappointing eight hours that can’t seem to decide whether it’s closer to Call of Duty or Generation Kill. If you’re looking for a single-player experience, you should not buy Battlefield 3. If, on the other hand, you’re looking for a multiplayer experience you can’t find anywhere else, this is the game for you — even if it’s a bit downsized from its PC roots. The game’s issues are outweighed by the fact that no other game on the market plays like this.

if the focus is on the online portion, why even bother with the time, effort, and money it takes to create a single player experience if that is not where your true intentions are being directed towards? For those who are playing online, congratulations as you have been treated to one of the best the gaming world has seen in this day and age.

Those who buy the game for multiplayer likely won’t care that these elements aren’t up to par, but what stings most is the thought of what DICE could have done to evolve and expand its multiplayer design skills if the mantra of "BEAT COD" hadn’t been drummed so relentlessly into the development process. Battlefield didn’t need to be more like Call of Duty to succeed, it just had to double down on what it was already good at. Hopefully that’s a lesson that will be learned by the time Battlefield 4 roars into view.

After an undue degree of anticipation which probably owes a lot to EA’s frequent verbal sallies on Activision’s stronghold, Battlefield 3 is precisely the game you’re expecting – the game military first-person shooters have taught us to expect, where single player campaigns serve chiefly as fodder for marketing campaigns, and online multiplayer supplies the bang for buck. It’s very much one of the year’s best shooters, but for all Frostbite 2’s volcanic achievements, it’s more a triumph of consolidation, blending elements from past games and popular competitors, than a triumph in its own right.

Playing with 64 people on a lag-free server has to be seen to be believed. In the limited amount of online PC play I’ve had so far (I’d say about 2 dozen matches), I’ve been impressed with the minimization of lag times. Experiences will vary, based on location and your Interpipes of course, but Battlefield 3 does a pretty good job of staying smooth and only a few times did I experience any really serious lag. But playing with all those people, on even larger maps with a full cadre of tanks and choppers and jets, feels more like full-scale war than any other military shooter I’ve played.

You’ve probably grasped what I’m trying to say by now. If you’ve got a thing for first-person shooter campaigns then Battlefield 3 is going to severely disappoint, but if multiplayer’s your game then you’re going to find an enormous amount to like.
