The ultimate aim in the ongoing PES series is to match what people see when they go to a match or watch a big game on TV with what they experience on their console. Konami has been trying for a few years now to regain its past glory, will this be the one?

This year’s PES title won’t change anyone’s mind about the series. It hasn’t gotten any less complex, but it also hasn’t lost any of its brilliance. In that sense, its success is all its own.

All things considered, PES 2012 is a great game for die-hard fans of the sport. The mechanics that have made the series great in years past have made a return, while new additions like offensive off-ball control add an almost endless number of ways players can attack and score. Customization options allow for newcomers and veterans to approach the title however they choose, provided they can navigate the menus. Things like Create a Stadium and Football Life, as well as the various online options, should keep players busy until next season. If you’re a fan of soccer games, there’s absolutely no reason not to pick this one up.

Looking down the pitch towards the far stand for a goal kick is the best example of this. We actually felt a swell of nervous pride when we took in the scene which felt so real, and it’s all thanks to Konami getting the lighting spot on.

The license issue won’t go away (though having the Spanish Primera Division helps), and despite PES reveling in the Champions League details, that still doesn’t compensate for not having the biggest teams that draw the core fans. Manchester United are included in full licensed detail, but big rivals Manchester City and Liverpool, for example, are re-created with generic names, which remains disappointing.

It’ll be interesting to see if this year’s gameplay additions will return next year for PES 2013, and if so, how they will be improved. Until then, PES fans will have a strong but flawed soccer game to tide them over.

It’s these interactions and depth to proceedings that means that PES 2012 will be my choice for solo football this season. As fun as it is to play with all the right kits, teams and players, there has to be enjoyable substance to the actions and PES has loads this year.

Amid all my talk of evolution, there’s something refreshing in PES about seeing its creator’s hand. Some of the quirks I could easily write off as negatives imbue the game with a kind of personality and organic feel that’s uncommon among sports games. No two matches — even between the same teams — ever feel quite the same, and it’s that element of surprise that just might, at least offline, make Pro Evolution my go-to soccer game this season.

Then came a little game that caught my friends and I off guard, it was called International Superstar Soccer 98 (ISS 98) and it changed everything. Suddenly, Fifa was out and our new found friend from Konami was in; the gameplay, the game modes, the Ravanelli/Paul Ince cover, it trumped Fifa in almost every way.

PES 2012 is a bit of a mixed bag then. The improvements in AI and excellent online modes are a solid basis to continue re-building PES to its former glory, but the weird physics and newfound lack of weight are a concern. It still feels like PES just isn’t 100% sure where it should be going. There’s a lot of good here, and the right focus could see it being great once again.
