Calling for a second defender is also far more important this year, as it allows the user to sit back and survey the action, covering any potentially dangerous runs and passes when they occur. Players can also tug at sprinting players to slow them down, essential for those lightning quick wingers, although it can lead to fouls. It’s a completely new defensive system, which genuinely encourages players to react and adapt to a multitude of different scenarios.

That’s pretty much as close as we get to the auto-defend nature of previous Fifa incarnations. Meanwhile, the jockeying function, accessed via the left trigger, allows you to face the incoming player and create a barrier between him and the goal; this can also be combined with the "run" button in order to deal with sprinting opponents.

FIFA 12 isn’t perfect: for every incredible moment the new collision system creates, there’s one that just looks awkward or buggy. The new dribbling setup can be great with space, but I often come across unrealistic movement with players pushing the ball around through a series of touches that made them look more like someone playing futsal rather than as a professional on an outdoor pitch. These little gripes could likely be fixed in future patches, but for now I can’t help but be slightly distracted when the rest of the game just looks and plays so well.

Precision Dribbling is the next new addition that, in the hands of an expert and when used with a player who has the skills, can add solo flair moves capable of opening up defenses and creating space for you to move into. Assuming you’re doing it right, of course. Do it wrong and you’ll collide with a defender and look like an idiot as you tumble to the ground. But again, that’s a great thing. The combination of Precision Dribbling and the Impact Engine gives the game some extra skill headroom for experts to grow into — you really can play a beautiful game when you become attuned with the game’s timing. But that same system also lets you play a pretty ugly physical game too, and clatter players off the ball if your timing is poor. Or anything in between, depending on the circumstances.

For instance, the new defensive tactics. Instead of calling on your fellow teammates to corner someone with the ball and avoiding a pass, you now have to carefully shadow the active player, keeping on them but not getting close enough that you’ll be tempted to use a sliding kick that will earn you a referee’s penalty card. Now, if they do manage to slip you, jostling is available. This is basically a small attempt to get the ball to slip loose from their legs, such as tugging at their shirt to stop their momentum or hitting them with a slight arm tap. Again, the referee watches out for this carefully, so don’t make too much of a habit of it. But these small techniques really help the flow of gameplay, and when you have the ball offensively, you can use dribbling. No, this isn’t like basketball dribbling, but rather being able to control the direction of the ball’s movement with your feet by way of small taps on the analog stick. You don’t want to press too far in, or you’ll change their direction, but with this technique, you can fool an incoming player, zigzagging them (so to speak) and continuing to make your way towards the net.

There’s still that incredible fluidity of play, the incredibly detailed level of animation. FIFA still surprises you with goals you’ve never seen before, it still takes full advantage of exclusive licenses to provide the most authentic football experience bar the real deal.

FIFA 12 delivers a deeper, more engaging, and quite simply more enjoyable experience this year than in previous years that I can remember. The game play is more defined with better dribbling, smarter and more tactical defense moves and control schemes, and player A.I. that really allows the CPU opponents to be as close as any human reactions you can encounter. Toss in new world wide communication improvements such as Support Your Club, Head to Head Online Seasons, and of course the FIFA Ultimate Team, and you have a game that not only has depth against the CPU, but community players will have more than a year’s worth of content to enjoy as well.

Since the onset of the current console generation EA’s Fifa has evolved into a true football lover’s game. Gone is the simplistic ‘pick-up-and-play’ nature that defined the series pre-2007, replaced by something altogether more in-depth, more complex, and more grown up. In its quest to replicate the real-life sport as accurately as possible Fifa has taken on an almost religious following of fans seeking the promised land of the perfect digital-beautiful game.

The first major overhaul in FIFA 12 is the Impact Engine, which EA claims ‘improves collision variety, accuracy, and momentum preservation’. This much lauded feature has been called revolutionary but all we really noticed was that players were bumping into each other more.

They’re certainly ambitious features, but at the time of writing it’s impossible to judge how much of a draw they’re likely to be. Those who play every FIFA to death probably don’t need an extra reason to boot up the game and fair-weather fans don’t seem to be the sort these features are aimed at. But they’re not the be all and end all of FIFA 12’s projected success – that depends on how people take to the changes made to the in-game engine.

Thankfully, as if out of nowhere, things start to make sense again. You’ll have got things sorted both in your mind and your fingers, now having to do things alien to them after years of being groomed by EA Sports’ mild evolutions. You’ll finally understand (although be nowhere near to mastering) the new jockeying, contain and tackle system, and begin to appreciate how FIFA 12 feels like a new era for the franchise. The naysayers were, thankfully, very wrong. This is the biggest risk EA has taken with FIFA in its long history. Meddling with the established order of things can’t have been an easy decision, yet it’s paid off big time.

The guts of FIFA 12, the Player Impact Engine, defines the game’s attempt at authenticity by basing player collisions on true physics and not just triggered animations. The result is an incredible amount of variety in player movement, most of it feeling natural and realistic. Of course, occasional hiccups result in some appendage-bouncing, glitchy action, which is to be expected this early in the game’s (and engine’s) life.

You’ll find none of that here on TVG though – we love added realism and depth, and we’re totally enamoured by this year’s new Tactical Defending system. Simply explained, the system takes a massive chunk out of your ability to ‘auto-pressure’ opponents. There are still controls to initiate an ‘auto-press’ of sorts, but it’s nowhere near as effective and can’t be solely relied upon to break-down opponents. Now, new control options such as ‘Jockeying’ have to be taken advantage of if you’re to have any hope of containing the other team. It’s much more about standing off the attacking player, keeping your back to goal in a good position to make sure the attacker can’t turn you, and ushering them away from potentially dangerous areas. The standing tackle has been tweaked with less manoeuvrability so that you’re penalised more for missing with it – running straight at a player and sticking your foot in will now leave gaping holes for the other team to exploit if you don’t get your timing right. Consequently, new controls have been added that allow you to tug on an opponent’s shirt and subtly impede them if they do manage to get by your defender (although using them too excessively will result in cheap free-kicks and penalties).
