Onto the multiplayer and, although we haven’t had the opportunity to test it at the time this review goes to press, we can say that it’s much improved in terms of features and modes. An all-new Co-op Championship mode is the major new addition – it allows 2 players to take on the role of team-mates online and fight for car improvements throughout the course of a full season while also racing towards the constructor’s championship. Traditional competitive multiplayer, on the other hand, has been bolstered to 16 players online and full grids thanks to the addition of 8 AI cars (last year it was 12 players and no CPU cars). Split-screen multiplayer for 2 players also makes it into the game this year for those of you with real friends. Keep your eyes peeled on TVG for more info on the multiplayer as we go hands-on with it post-release…

For starters, the cars now have suspension. The reason you kept spinning at the right-hander (Portier) after the hairpin at Monaco? You rode the kerb, dummy. F1 2010 doesn’t let you attack kerbs because they throw the car off balance to the point that you’ll almost certainly spin if you try it. The new game is totally different. You can chuck the car over apexes, feeling the ‘thump thump’ through your controller or racing wheel as you go. You have greater confidence in your car as a result – and that means more freedom to enjoy the ride.

Graphically the game has taken another step towards realism, too. The tracks have been treated to a graphical overhaul, with a host of impressive new textures and shaders. (Incidentally, Buddah International and Nürburgring have joined the circuit roster for this season, bringing the total number of tracks to 19). It’s a fantastic-looking game, still boasting some of the best reflections and lighting effects the racing genre has seen. Throwing your vehicle around the circuit as the heavens empty their contents onto the track is still one of the most impressive things I’ve seen from the cockpit of a virtual car. The droplets of water rolling down the screen, the reflection of trees and banners shimmering in the wet-sheen of the track, the spray kicked up from the car in front – it’s a nightmare to drive in, but good grief does it look good.

While it’s never going to be as surprising or novel as Codies’ first stab at Formula One, for a seasonal update there’s a remarkable number of tweaks and changes, all of which are for the better. What’s more, the game has become one of the most substantial and compelling multiplayer racing offerings around and, with the addition of co-op at whatever diffi culty you choose, is more inclusive for all skill levels than the majority of online racers. This multiplayer is where the longevity lies and there’s more than enough here to keep you busy. Until next year, at least.

Above all you need to become comfortable with the fact that, at least when the game begins, finishing in first is not a requirement, it’s not expected and frankly it’s just not possible. Players shouldn’t really get their first wins in F1 2011 until they have a car with the capacity to get out in front and the skills to drive it consistently quick.

Either way, car management, patience and careful maneuvering all play a greater part in the racing. Kick up gravel and debris will visibly stick to your wheels, reducing grip, tyre selection can shave seconds off your lap times and race stewards will be hot on any dodgy driving. A little too hot perhaps. An illegal overtake is greeted by an immediate 10 second penalty, without the opportunity to let the offended retake their place. There can be a lack of feedback to any misdemanour too, a few times I’ve been called up on an illegal pass and I’ve honestly had no idea where I’ve gone wrong. I have no doubt it was my own fault, but a little more info on my indiscretion would have been welcome.

In all, F1 2011 is a worthy successor that is sure to please many and is easily the best option for any Formula One fanatics out there. It’s not without its problems, but it has moved the series forward with a vastly improved handling model and a more engrossing race environment that will almost certainly have you believing you really are Lewis Hamilton for a split-second.

Getting tyres to the optimal temperature takes time, and peak performance is finite. It’s an aspect that played a small part in F1 2010, but here it’s pronounced, and to great effect: qualifying sessions become condensed time trials, while races are as much about managing the car as attacking the track.
