Taking a small step into the future, Red River depicts a fictional conflict with contemporary geopolitical themes, which will unfold over three distinct acts in both single player and drop-in-drop-out co-operative play for up to four players online. Faced with new counter-insurgency combat and the returning threat of the Chinese PLA, players will feel the tension, brutality and carnage of modern conflict from the perspective of a marine fireteam on deployment in a hostile country, thousands of miles from home.

These mini-scenarios are very focused, and actually very fun. Some are more fun than others – combat sweep missions are very short and un-inspiring, despite being full of raw shootyness, and yet Last Stand has that very epic, very desperate, "Hold the Line!" feel to it that makes it the best mode out of the lot. Fire Team Engagements is definitely the best mode in the game, although that statement will be clarified in a second. It’s a shame that (at time of writing) there are only two available maps per mode. We imagine that’s where we’re going to see some DLC, but two per mode seems a little thin on the ground so we’re a little disappointed there.

The team-based gameplay is covered by semi-competent A.I., a system that needs more input than you might be used to from similar styled war games. As expected tactics are very crucial, and if you’re not playing co-op, you have to really stay on-top of the your Marines to make sure they fall into suit. Furthermore, ‘Red River’ maintains the same “Flashpoint†level of realism you will have to be twice as alert because one bullet in this game can take you out. While there is a patching system, this is not your typical “Modern Warfare.†There is no auto-regeneration. So if you bleed, patch it up, but more importantly, don’t get shot. For the real extreme simulation junkies, a hardcore mode is available to test your true skill under fire.
