inFAMOUS 2 is focused without being linear and wild without ever coming completely unhinged. It has all the exhilarating derring-do of Saturday morning do-gooders but with the wickedly wry smile of those who stay home on Sunday to watch Saturday’s fare all over again.

inFamous 2 had a lot to live up to and manages it. It’s a supercharged sequel and another action-packed adventure for the Sony ranks.

Everything in Infamous 2 is cleverly interconnected. If you neglect side quests, the city will be less safe (making the game more difficult) and you’ll have fewer skills to purchase. Neglecting to collect Blast Shards gives Cole less electricity to work with. Ignoring Dead Drops will keep the story darker and more nebulous. And refusing to work with UGC not only forces you to miss out on easy Trophies but also removes a welcome community feel to Infamous 2 that the original lacked.

Infamous 2 toes a perfect line between too-strong and too-puny, between human and superhuman, between risk and restraint. It halfheartedly delivers on a few of its promises, but its shortcomings are far outweighed by this one stellar achievement: It knows how to make you feel powerful.

Infamous 2 embodies significant growth in Cole’s superhero journey. The first title established him and set our expectations for Sucker Punch’s universe, but the sequel expands it into a highly entertaining, thrilling, and responsive action game bursting with stout combat. It’s not always even — the combat camera is still off-kilter, and the Manichean morality system feels a little long in the tooth (but then, arguably, it does across several genres) — yet the numerous improvements define it as one of the most entertaining titles you’ll play in 2011.

The more I played Infamous 2, the more I found myself disengaged with the story, instead enjoying the experience solely for its amazing open-world superhero fights. The game sacrifices its narrative flow for more fantastic elements. This isn’t a necessarily a bad thing; it just ends up being more about the action and random moments than Cole’s journey.

inFAMOUS 2 builds upon the excellent foundation established in its predecessor: give the player mass powers of electric destruction, present a standard good-and-evil moral duality, and let them loose in a city to do as they will. It’s likely one of the best superhero-sandbox game ever made, and though it has its flaws, the game remains a polished experience from start to finish.

eurogamer.net review
inFamous 2 is a great example of the iterative approach to sequels: it’s driven by tweaks, fixes, and subtle refinements, and there’s a sense throughout that the series is starting to come into focus. During its best moments, it feels like something we might have been given by the Assassin’s Creed team if they’d grown up immersed in the works of Steve Ditko rather than Umberto Eco: a hard-edged pulp adventure where your tools are perfectly matched to your missions. If the original game gave Cole a purpose, this one provides a little personality to go with it.

Small problems hold Infamous 2 back from greatness, but there’s still a lot of electrifying fun to be had in Cole’s latest adventure.

InFamous 2’s flaws will do nothing to convert gamers already resistant to sandbox gaming, but those who are always waiting eagerly for a new open-world to explore will find themselves right at home.

InFamous 2 is a superhero-themed sandbox game that has the unenviable task of following up a beloved title. While technical and design choices make this a bit a disappointment, some great set pieces, fun powers, and memorable battles still make for an enjoyable ride.
