gametrailers.com review
Dirt 3 is an absolutely gorgeous game to stare at, which is why we wasted so much time talking about replays. Environments are lush and varied, lighting and dust trails look phenomenal, and the damage models are top of the class with parts breaking off and crumpled frames. Still, with the snow banks and loose dirt, it’s disappointing that the team still hasn’t implemented a system for terrain deformation yet.

Block has been doing this sort of thing for a few years now and how it’s never ended up in a game until now is a mystery. In DiRT 3 it almost feels like an engine-drive version of Tony Hawk’s, complete with open world arenas to explore and missions to discover.

DiRT 3 is hard to pick fault with. It’s got the looks, the style, the superb sense of speed, and spot-on handling model that blurs the line between sim and arcade. It also introduces Gymkhana and with it excellent potential for players becoming addicted to going for new high scores. What it doesn’t do is innovate in the racing game genre, generally making refinements where needed rather than redefining what’s expected in a modern racer. It’s at the top of the tree as far as rally racers go.

Almost every other race during the ‘Dirt Tour’ (read: single player career) takes the form of a standard Rally i.e. staggered starts over numerous stages – your total time across all stages used to determine your final position. Yes, a co-driver reading out navigational data is included. Concentration is key as one wrong flick of the wheel will send you straight into the ditch with little chance of recovery due to the relatively short stage lengths – a few longer stages thrown into the mix would have been nice.

Gymkhana appears both as a free ride playground (complete with specific, but optional, tasks) and a part of the career via fun events like Sprints (tackling tricks like drift slides under tight gaps in a specific order), freestyle matches where order isn’t important, and freeform contests. Online Multiplayer also includes Gymkhana among the more traditional race types, with capture the flag-esque Transporter events and infected-style Outbreak races. The addition of Gymkhana is great – I particularly like how the free ride area at London’s Battersea Power Station keeps growing as you unlock new sections.

In Dirt 3 a few scratches tarnish an otherwise impeccable product. It’s a superb racing experience and shouldn’t be missed. While the agent isn’t the best leader through the tour, and the garage is limited in its operation, the solid gameplay, variety of tracks and events, and overall fun factor make this a terrific game.
