SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED builds on the true drivers experience by introducing the driver’s battle, an even more authentic and primal feeling of power and speed which elevates the fundamental competitive race into a struggle for supremacy against other drivers and even the track itself. In SHIFT 2 UNLEASHED, players’ hands sweat and ache as they clutch onto the controller, their pulse races from the break-neck speeds experienced through the first-person cockpit view.

The much touted helmet cam plays a big role in capturing this realism, placing the player’s perspective from within the helmet itself. The way the point of view subtly looks towards the apexes of turns as you approach is a nice touch, serving as an unobtrusive but helpful guide. It’s a minor touch, but it captures the cacophony of noise and claustrophobia one gets from being strapped into caged race car, wearing a helmet.

There’s an argument that racing games are becoming stagnant. With this generation of console, graphics and car handling are reaching a plateau, and innovation needs to come from elsewhere. To my mind, Autolog is doing more for the genre than anything else right now, and other developers are going to have to conjure up something similar to remain on equal footing with EA. Shift 2 is technically very impressive, but like Hot Pursuit, it’s the social features surrounding the game that define it as an experience. If you’re a serious fan of the genre, know that Shift 2 does several things better than anything else on the market right now, which makes it an essential purchase.

Shift 2 Unleashed’s a violent and immersive racer that recreates the driving experience like no other game on the market. In doing so it builds well on the first Shift’s foundations, benefitting from Slightly Mad Studios’ more refined touch and the inclusion of Autolog, but its handling is still too loose and its steps forward too small for it to truly beat Gran Turismo and Forza – although it does enough to ensure that it’s pulled ever closer.

Shift 2 defines the franchise in a way that the first one didn’t. Although the cars can feel like they swivel on a center axis, the racing is pretty good, and the overall experience gets a boost from the graphics and the erratic nature of the AI racers. It doesn’t blow by the competition, but by improving its lap times, Shift 2 is on its way.

The team at Slightly Mad Studios revamped the entire physics engine and tweaked the AI in Shift 2 with the goal of moving it closer to a true racing simulation. The results are a little uneven. The cars do handle a bit better and more realistically than they did in the first game, but Shift still lacks the same kind of feel and feedback for the road that Forza and Gran Tursimo have. Without spending time tweaking and modifying your car’s settings (which you can do quite extensively), you’ll still find yourself listing and sliding on curves when you really shouldn’t be.

At the end of the day, Shift 2 is an enjoyable racing game. It certainly doesn’t have the finesse or the definitive feeling of its rivals, but it doesn’t set out to do that. It’s pretty up front about what it wants to be – a loud, brash and exciting thrill ride of a racing game that mixes realism with over-the-top action. If you’re not so keen on the more sim-like nature of Forza or GT, it’s a great buy. And if you like either or both those games, but want to experience raw and exciting racing, Shift 2 certainly delivers enough frenetic action to make it a great additional purchase. In that respect, it’s a winning formula.
