Crysis 2 has done an amazing thing here. It’s a sequel that while borrowing heavily from the first Crysis, plays out absolutely nothing like it and creates its own standalone experience. While most FPS like CoD series or Halo do improve in each iteration, this is one of the few games that dramatically enhances its previous installment. This is the new FPS, the thinking man’s FPS, and I can’t wait to get my second playthrough started.

This illusion doesn’t hold up well indoors or in some of the more linear parts of the game, but when Crysis 2 opens up there’s this process of discovery that’s truly impressive. I played through levels multiple times and still found new pathways and tactical options I hadn’t noticed before.

Crysis 2 is one of those games that you just have to stop and stare at every now and then. Water, smoke, and flames all look fantastic. There’s an emphasis on lighting as glare shines through windows, and you’ll witness huge structures collapsing regularly. Characters look more natural than the leather-faced protagonists of the first game, although some do look better than others.

Crysis 2’s shiny graphics are nice and all, but the Nanosuit is the true star of the show. Offering a true sense of power rarely seen in modern shooters, it helps to make this one of the most exciting games of the year.

Crysis 2 largely avoids the problems that surfaced during the beta, though there were some hiccups. With no dedicated servers, a few matches were interrupted by the annoying server migration. In my seven hours on the battlefield I occasionally suffered from game-crippling lag, but these instances were rare.

This adds to Crysis 2’s replayability, since the abilities you earn and the weapon modifications you find are available in all previously completed chapters, on any difficulty level. It’s a sort of new game plus situation, without explicitly naming it as such. This makes up for Crysis 2’s smaller playground.

The setting is more than a happy coincidence, of course. Other than taking the occasional liberty when it comes to geographic placement of its landmarks, much of the iconography on display also conjures up powerful images of 9/11, so much so that you don’t quite know where to look when you watch a procession of buildings collapse in the Financial District. Crytek has repeatedly maintained its desires to craft an evocative tale, and to do this it’s ridden the coattails of that history-defining day.

Crysis 2 for the PlayStation 3 is an exceptional shooter and perhaps the best looking game on the system.

Crysis 2 is a no-brainer for any FPS fan and might even appeal to those who desire a twist to the tried-and-true shooter format. The Nanosuit is a definite game-changer; from the visor that offers tactical advice to the minor platforming features to the many upgrades, it give the player awesome control. In some ways, I was actually reminded of Deus Ex when playing this sequel; the sci-fi franchise is indeed part-RPG and has a different structure, but there are elements of Crysis 2 that don’t revolve around reflexes and finger dexterity. The campaign is long and involved, the intensity, emotion and immersiveness continues to get better and better as time goes on, the technical achievement cannot be overstated, and the multiplayer is a rewarding bonus. The AI trips and stumbles, the glitches are there, and I got really bored during the first few hours, but the end result is a compelling, involving adventure. Give it a try.

eurogamer.net review
The long road through the game, winding its way towards Central Park, lacks variation, but then it was never intended to be a Bond-style rollercoaster ride around diverse global tourist locations. Rather, this was always intended to be a game about a suit, and what that represents. In almost every way that matters then, Crysis 2 is dressed for success.

Though the overall tone of this review may suggest that my Crysis 2 experience is largely an average one, I did have exceedingly high expectations for Crytek’s shooter. Furthermore, some of my disappointment could be attributed to the fact that I’ve come straight from playing the Killzone 3 campaign, which was so much more intense and ultimately more enjoyable. Crysis 2, of course, is a different kind of shooter that requires a different type of mentality.

Speaking of the Nanosuit, Crytek has made some adjustments to the way it performs. Fans of the original Crysis will no doubt remember the armor and stealth abilities, which still do exactly what they imply. Speed has been changed to be a simple sprint option; when you hold the shift key to sprint, it will drain energy from the Nanosuit. Power has been removed and adjusted; if you hold the melee button, you’ll be able to do either a powerful melee attack or move certain objects, such as cars. There have been several additions to the Nanosuit. First and foremost, there’s the option to customize it so that you can gain certain perks and bonuses in different areas, i.e. armor upgrades, longer camouflage time, and so on. These customizable options not only add different ways to play through the game, similar to customizing plasmids in BioShock, but they also allow for tactical advantages in combat.
