Crysis 2 is a spectacular game in nearly every way. Accurate, innovative gameplay combines nicely with the best presentation the Xbox 360 has ever seen for a truly incredible experience. Halo and Gears of War: you’re both on notice. There’s a new contender on Microsoft’s little console and its name is Crysis.

Crysis 2 has done an amazing thing here. It’s a sequel that while borrowing heavily from the first Crysis, plays out absolutely nothing like it and creates its own standalone experience. While most FPS like CoD series or Halo do improve in each iteration, this is one of the few games that dramatically enhances its previous installment. This is the new FPS, the thinking man’s FPS, and I can’t wait to get my second playthrough started.

Crytek’s fourth game is their most confident to date, carefully balancing silliness, seriousness, and spectacle, and despite looking like a laundry list of bad shooter clichés at first glance the end product is surprisingly fresh-faced and triumphant. Switching to New York gives Crytek what it desperately needed: a credible sense of menace to go alongside gorgeous technical fortitude and impressive artistic direction.

It’s a beautiful, engrossing experience that avoids the anemic, scripted playbook made law by the 500 pound shooter gorilla. It plays well, encourages creative problem-solving, and confidently delivers a series of escalating and changing encounters and scenarios that will push you to think in a way few shooters have in an era of increasingly funneled experiences. While Crysis 2 loses its footing during a few odd moments, Crytek more than delivers on the promise of their previous games.

Crytek’s Nanosuited sequel is a stellar sci-fi shooter, featuring a gripping single-player campaign, action-packed multiplayer, and some jaw-dropping visuals.

Crysis 2’s story is substance-heavy as well, weaving together conspiratorial narrative threads involving an alien invasion, the outbreak of a horrible epidemic, and a potentially evil megacorporation, all framed by one of the most realistic visions of New York City ever glimpsed in a game. The story will make sense even to series newcomers, though I couldn’t help feeling like a bit more explanatory exposition (outside of an all-too-brief opening cinematic) would have helped make the early parts of the game more impactful.

videogametalk.com review
Easily one of the best looking games on the Xbox 360, Crysis 2 falls a bit short on the 8 to 10 hour single player campaign, but flourishes in offering up very addictive multiplayer. While I missed the open landscape of the original Crysis, the somewhat linear nature of the single player campaign Crysis 2 didn’t bother me as much as I thought it would. However, the poor A.I., on both sides of the conflict, drags down the enjoyment level of the single player. Going up against the human players in multiplayer is extremely satisfying though and creatively uses unlockables to drive you forward with match after match. Crysis 2 is easily the best first person shooter that’s been released in 2011 so far and vastly more balanced than the original Crysis. Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 shooter fans that love multiplayer should pick up Crysis 2 as soon as possible.

Crysis 2 largely avoids the problems that surfaced during the beta, though there were some hiccups. With no dedicated servers, a few matches were interrupted by the annoying server migration. In my seven hours on the battlefield I occasionally suffered from game-crippling lag, but these instances were rare.

As deep and intense a shooter as we’ve ever seen. Crysis 2’s throwaway plot is made up for many times by the tactical scope of its incredibly realised choreographed sandbox environments. A most impressive sequel.

Gamers are sure to appreciate the diversity of weapons and, like I said, the advantages of the Nanosuit. Weapons are appropriate for all play styles, so you shouldn’t worry if you’re the kind of gamer who prefers the dash-onto-the-scene-guns-blazing approach, because there’s plenty of fire-power at your disposal.

Crysis was a superb game, and it wasn’t so just because of the astounding technology that brought it to life. Crysis 2 doesn’t make as strong of a mark, but in a sea of me-too shooters, it feels unique and offers an exciting journey that’s as much your own making as that of the developer. The wow factor is undercut by a few issues–the bargain-bin AI and some unfortunate bugs among them.

Crysis 2 is less ambitious than Crytek’s previous games, but it is also the most polished, refined and enjoyable title that the studio’s ever produced. With tighter gameplay, better level design, and an exquisite sense of flowing action, Crysis 2 is a damn great title that any shooter fan would do well to play at least once.

The long road through the game, winding its way towards Central Park, lacks variation, but then it was never intended to be a Bond-style rollercoaster ride around diverse global tourist locations. Rather, this was always intended to be a game about a suit, and what that represents. In almost every way that matters then, Crysis 2 is dressed for success.

Crysis 2 ticks all the right boxes, with a lengthy campaign that packs plenty of replay value and multiplayer options that are bound to prove a big hit. If only the suit’s powers were managed a little better, and the AI was up to scratch, we’d be recommending this outright.

Crysis 2 is a veritable wake up call to all those FPS developers and consumers who have gotten too comfortable with hallway-shaped shooters. It’s not a game changer by any means, but it does show that the genre as a whole has the latitude to aspire to higher standards.

It might not feel as special as its predecessor, but Crysis 2 is still a high-quality shooter, both alone or in multiplayer.

While the single-player campaign is something I can see myself returning to a couple more times in a quest for Achievements/Trophies, the multiplayer side of Crysis 2 has me utterly hooked. I came for the pretty graphics, was happy with the solid shooter underneath them and am pretty much beside myself with how unexpectedly good the online play is.
