Play as famous Nintendo characters or challenge your own personalised Mii character to a match against of the likes of Mario, Peach, Yoshi or Toad. However, choose your stage carefully as it will affect gameplay in challenging ways changing the way the ball and your surroundings behave. During each game you will also find items that will scupper the opposition and coins that increase your score, so that the final result is never certain until the very end. For example allowing you to slip up your opponents with banana peel or shoot a green shell to stun another player for a couple of seconds so that they lose possession of the ball.

Nintendo has proven time and time again that it can slap Mario and the gang on the cover of pretty much any kind of game, punt it out the door, and it’ll sell. The franchise has been largely synonymous with quality, though a few duds have snuck into the line-up. Past attempts to pair the heroic plumber with popular sporting pastimes haven’t always yielded the best results, but Mario Sports Mix strikes the right balance between solid sporting action and Mushroom Kingdom-themed wackiness

Mario Sports Mix isn’t the kind of game that one would play for long stints, but it is much more interesting than, let’s say, Wii Party. If you’re caught (for some odd and unbelievable reason) in the middle between the two, go with Sports Mix. You’ll thank me later. However, don’t be fooled by the word “Sports†on the cover. There’s no stats, no progression, no teams…it’s basically an Olympic Games type of title without Sonic and the SEGA crew…but has dodgeball.

Basketball and Hockey are two of the game’s better events. They allow a good mix of speedy matches and skill-based gameplay; scoring never feels like it happened by accident. Even when your opponent is pelting you with Shells and Bob-ombs, it never feels like they’ll be able to win without trying. Your opponent always has the chance to come out of nowhere and steal victory (well, a human opponent anyway). And Dodgeball, while not as nuanced as the other games, is fun just because it’s so frenetic and fast-paced; it’s the only event where you can consistently win a round in under a minute.

The four mini-games included – one for each of the sports featured in the game – are a nice addition. The volleyball game, for example, throws some rhythm action into the mix and has players trying to hit coloured volleyballs at the right time in order to create the percussion for one of three Mario or Final Fantasy themes. Like the rest of the game, this is more enjoyable with four people.

The multiplayer is so much fun that it’s almost enough to forgive the game’s solo-mode shortcomings. In fact, a few more sports which compliment that mode, or indeed, a more challenging AI would have been sufficient to bump up the game’s overall score in this review. As it stands, Mario Sports Mix feels a little too much like a lightweight party game. Make no mistake, players can have a lot of fun with it, but their enjoyment will be inexorably linked to whether or not they can get some friends to join in.

There are four sports – Basketball, Hockey, Volleyball and Dodgeball – each with their own separate tournament structures. Hockey is the star of the show, primarily because it’s almost as fast and violent as the actual sport. Playing in teams of two or three, the aim is simple – smack the coin-shaped puck past the Shy Guy goalie and into the back of the goal with as much force as possible

Last and least is dodgeball. Sadly, it’s not the chaotic bloodbath you were subjected to during rainy PE lessons – instead, this is the gentlemanly American interpretation, where everyone’s nice and polite and takes it in turns to try to press A and B to catch the ball, and no-one ever complains that there’s no useful visual or aural feedback whatsoever, making the whole thing one big crap shoot. And we do mean crap.

Mario Sports Mix feels like a weird cross between something like Mario Sluggers and Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games. It doesn’t have the depth and appeal of one of the bigger sports game, but it’s too barebones to be a cool mini-game party sports game. It’s shiny and humorous, and for little kids or a single evening it could make a fun party game, but this is a pretty weak offering, especially compared to all the fun sports games Mario has starred in.
