Mass Effect 2 is populated with some of the most engaging, well-acted space people you could hope to meet, and the script has been carefully designed to make clunking non-sequiturs a vanishingly rare occurrence. As you tour planets and space stations, assembling a crack team of galaxy saviours and meeting all manner of strange and sometimes sexy aliens, you’ll also find endless sidequests and subplots to get drawn into. Even if you don’t choose to take most of them on, their very existence helps to bolster the idea of the Mass Effect world as a functioning universe.

Mass Effect 2 is such a story- and character-driven experience, I won’t give away to many story details out of fear of ruining anything for anyone who may not have played the game. Players assume the role of Commander Shepard, a decorated soldier and an individual widely heralded as the hero of humanity. Shepard isn’t your ordinary game hero / heroine but instead the work of your own creation.

Gameplay is organized into recruiting missions, loyalty missions (one for each teammate) and story missions. You’ll spend most of your time dealing death to baddies in typical cover based shooter fashion, with a tasty layer of RPG on top. Upon starting up, you’ll pick a basic character type and earn experience points to level up your unique abilities – basically, the sci-fi version of spells that you’ll cast in battle. It’s fast and frenetic, with plenty of “hacking†mini-games, character interaction, and the occasional boss fight to keep things moving.

I’ve just 2300 or so words gushing about everything from my love of space to the best DLC seen thus far in video games, but the bottom line is this: if you do not buy Mass Effect 2, you’re missing out on a game so good that it could (and honestly should) be in contention for Game of the Year again, a year after it already took so many high honors. It is, without a doubt, the deepest, most inviting world created thus far, going farther and growing more expansive than almost any medium available. It’s immensely replayable, offers a story and characters that are all genuinely interesting and… just stop reading this and go buy the game already, will ya?

I could just say that ME2 improves upon the original in nearly every possible way, but it’s far more than that. BioWare took the existing narrative and didn’t just continue it, but built it into the framework of this sequel. Games like Quest for Glory and Baldur’s Gate tip-toed in these waters years ago, and Dragon Age: Origins showed us real consequences just recently, but ME2 creates true continuity, where every decision truly matters. Mass Effect 3 better be spectacular, because it’s going to be tough for BioWare to top this.

Mass Effect 2 was originally released back in January 2010 for the Xbox 360 and the PC, this is a brand new title for PlayStation 3 owners. The new package offers a fresh experience for newcomers, with tons of DLC included, and a more fluid experience for returning players who have already experienced it. Overall, the game is inarguably one of the most solid titles to come out in quite some time. Offering a fantastic storyline that will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish, BioWare has proven once again why it’s one of the top developers in the gaming industry. They took the time allotted and made an amazing game even more impressive. So what are you waiting for? Go get Mass Effect 2, it is available at retailers, and via the PlayStation Store.

I feel that it’s more of a minor bonus than a significant addition; it’s hardly a substitute for a port of the first game, but its presence here is still worthwhile. The more significant perk with this PS3 edition is that it comes bundled with almost all of the DLC BioWare has trickled out over the past 12 months. Some of it is great, some of it is merely alright, but it all helps to swell a world that’s already tumescent with top-notch content. Put simply, more is more.

If you choose to immediately input the cerberus code that comes in the retail box (it unlocks various extra game content and acts as the incentive to buy new at retail rather than go pre-owned) you will have another wait while you download and install 676MB of new content.

Mass Effect 2 for the PlayStation 3 is easily one of the most enjoyable titles/series that I’ve played in my years as a gamer, ranking up there amongst Zelda and Halo as one of my favorite franchises of all time. The developers at BioWare have really set the bar high for action RPG’s and for the gaming world in general. I’m definitely looking forward to seeing what BioWare has in store for us come next holiday season as Mass Effect 2 is going to be hard to top. I absolutely recommend picking up Mass Effect 2 for PS3 today. You won’t be disappointed.

Mass Effect. BioWare’s behemoth sci-fi RPG franchise has garnered more critical and commercial praise than any other franchise in the genre this console generation. An Xbox 360 exclusive, the Mass Effect franchise was one of the console’s exclusive heavy-hitters, sitting proudly next to the likes of Master Chief and Marcus Fenix. However, BioWare is not a Microsoft first-party developer. And as such, after more than three years since the first title hit store shelves, Commander John (or Jane) Shepard’s saga is finally hitting the Playstation 3.

Mass Effect 2 essentially does everything it does exceptionally well, and it shows from beginning to end. PlayStation 3 gamers had to wait a year to get their hands on Mass Effect 2, but the wait was well worth it. Not only do you have a game that’s already running on the engine for the upcoming Mass Effect 3, but you have a game packed with DLC and access to an in-game comic book that explains the game’s story to those new to Mass Effect. But don’t remain new to Mass Effect for long. Mass Effect 2 is a game that you should purchase, play, and enjoy. And you should do so as soon as time allows.

Coupled with a slightly inflated price for the late port, it doesn’t quite reach the levels that should be expected for the PS3 version. Mass Effect 2 stands on its own as an incredibly fun and well designed game, but if you can play it on another system with a Mass Effect save file to import, do that instead.
