Before you step into the action, you need to make the important choice of whether to be a hero or a villain. Your decision affects the people you meet in the game, as well as the missions you undertake and who you fight with and against. You get a variety of decent options to kit out your character, choosing from various powers, such as ice and fire. You then need to pick your preferred choice of movement, such as flight or acrobatics, as well as opting for one particular fighting style that will determine whether you’re the kind of superhero who likes to get up close and personal, or take your shots from a distance.

This freedom to experiment doesn’t quite extend into the player-versus-player areas, where knockbacks, stuns and crowd-control currently dominate. For the most part, your objective is to enable and hold onto resources as team points count down to zero. Tactically, it’s often more sensible to stand your ground and hope that your enemies repeatedly rush lemming-like into your knockbacks. More often than not, they do; either the players in general will need to up their game or some revisions will need to be made to this system.

Overall, DCUO feels like a PC game that was hastily thrown onto the PlayStation 3 without properly adapting it to the console. With the PC version offering better graphical performance for a cheaper price, it would be the version I would recommend, if I were willing to recommend it at all. But the game’s combat feels limp, the quest design is immediately monotonous, and the whole package manages to make being a superhero or villain feel like the most mundane thing in the world. Considering the game’s "everyone’s a hero/villain" plot, I suppose that makes perfect sense.
