It would be easy to dismiss this game as an expansion, but I’ve never seen an expansion that actually offers players this much more than its predecessor, including the introduction of one of the most promising multiplayer modes to come down the aqueduct in some time.

Brotherhood’s story is easier to follow, has an amazing variety of missions and replayability, and the soundtrack is amazing throughout. There’s no doubt you’ll be wanting more immediately following the end. With a campaign worthy of sequel status and a multiplayer mode full of fresh, entertaining ideas, there isn’t enough praise I can lay on AC: Brotherhood. Assassin’s Creed is one series I don’t mind interacting with annually, monthly, daily, now.

It seemed to be an impossible task for Ubisoft to turn around a year after the release of Assassin’s Creed II and deliver such a polished follow-up to a game that many critics were calling one of 2009’s best titles. Yet, against all odds, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood exists in 2010, and it not only lives up to the hype, but it manages to completely outclass its predecessor. Brotherhood is a game that Assassin’s Creed fans simply cannot afford to miss, and one of best games this year.

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood is definitely the apex of the Assassin’s Creed series thus far. The story does a great job of furthering both the historical plot as well as the overarching sci-fi elements of the story (Desmond has a much larger role here), and the game’s new structure is refreshing for those who may have found the back-and-forth structure of last year’s title to be a bit tedious. With plenty of story content and even more to unlock online, Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood is a must-purchase for fans of the series, and does quite a bit to improve upon an already-solid formula.

There are still so many other small details I could talk about, but they all hammer home the same point: this is a great game. The multiplayer aspects aren’t that engaging for me — there’s just not enough to do to balance out the frustration of not being able to defend myself in a fight. However, I love how deep the team has managed to make the single-player portion of the game (again). If you’ve followed the AC series this far, you’d be remiss to let this one pass you by; even with the criticisms I’ve listed above, I’m comfortable saying that another Assassin’s Creed game will make my list of “favorite games of the year.” I can’t wait to see what Ubisoft Montreal does next with the series.

Together these elements make Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood the most polished experience the series has created yet. It’s one that will exonerate fans and hush doubters, even if Ezio’s swarthy charms are starting to run as thin as an Italian waiter shamelessly flirting with your date.

If commerce isn’t your thing, take heart: like so much else in Brotherhood, it’s largely optional. While Brotherhood’s central story missions are engaging enough (if a little heavy on stealth, escort and oh-so-tedious tailing jobs), its structure is a little unusual, in that its relatively short central story is propped up by a slew of optional tasks, some of which come with their own storylines, and a few of which actually contain some of the game’s best moments.

But regardless of such shortcomings, Brotherhood’s success lies in taking what made AC2 work and simultaneously making it more coherent and more cinematic. It’s an exercise in perfecting what you’ve already got working; you’re not going to find much in the way of completely new material, but this is a superior game to its predecessor and a solid bridge to the next entry in the series.

Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood is a stunningly considered improvement on its predecessor. Essential for fans of the series, it’s also an adventure of tremendous substance and beauty in its own right.

There is joy in leaping across the Roman rooftops, taking in the grand sights in front of you and realizing that it is all your own playground. Stealing a combatant’s spear from him and impaling him on it is a brutal pleasure. And the little touches–the way Claudia meets Ezio’s stare with one of her own, or the fluid animations that characterize your agile maneuvers–are constant reminders of what makes these games so enchanting. This may not be Assassin’s Creed III, but like Ezio’s smirk, Brotherhood is too irresistible to ignore.

Brotherhood really looks the part, with a step up in the graphics department – particularly on PS3, and a massive and varied city to explore. It also introduces an innovative multiplayer suite, for which the team(s) should be applauded. At the end of the day, it depends what you’re looking for. If you’re new to Assassin’s Creed, this is a solid entry, but picking up the threads of the convoluted story may be a challenge. If you’re an experienced assassin, on the other hand, expect to tread pretty similar ground to the last title.
