PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2011 or PES 2011 will reinvigorate the series with the most advanced set of improved gameplay additions, control options and to catch up with the evolution of the real-life football. Central to its total freedom of play, PRO EVOLUTION SOCCER 2011 introduces a power bar for each player that allows the user to determine the exact strength and placement of every pass and shot. Balls can now be spread absolutely anywhere with surgical precision, with long balls into space, short passes to feet and intricate one-twos allowing the player to dictate play and control the tempo of a match.

[Dutch Translation] As a true football fan, I have played PES I was an addict gamer. The game is just so much improved and is, therefore, again a lot of fun. You need just as a noob to the barge. The game will have been greatly improved and is, in my view, more and more over the next few years. You will like this game PES-player not fast, because you have so many options. Despite these improvements, Konami has still a lot to be done again, but you are going to wait for the next parts.

After the promising strides made by last year’s reboot, PES 2011 feels very much a realisation of that potential. With its emphasis on fun still apparent, the added realism provided by control, animation and AI enhancements improve and broaden the package’s appeal no end. Factor in the added tactical flexibility and the addition of the online Master League, and it’s easy to see why PES’ return to form will be widely celebrated. Some may prefer FIFA’s more studied approach to football realism, but when it comes to pick-up-and-play fun and intensity, PES 2011 gets my vote this year.

The best thing to do here is probably stop the direct comparisons between the two; no matter what Konami’s western reps may tell us, it’s difficult to believe that Konami really want to beat FIFA in the realism stakes. As it stands, PES 2011 is a fun experience so long as you don’t go into it expecting a stunningly accurate representation of the sport. Of course, the problem is that that’s exactly what most football fans want.

PES 2011 is a good game. It’s the best version of PES I’ve played on the Xbox 360 and PS3, and it’s a step in the right direction – but it isn’t a FIFA beater. EA Sports started FIFA’s transformation many years ago and now the fruits of that investment are paying off every year, whereas PES 2011 feels like it’s just the start of a new beginning for the franchise. Fans will find a lot of positives, but fence-sitters will still want to go with EA’s game.

next-gen.biz review
The result is competent and complex, but not convincing enough to raise any significant emotion other than impatience. It feels like a clockwork approximation of football, lacking the grace, variety and scope of FIFA. Scoring – again, the ultimate aim of any football game – is again a matter of learning a small clutch of by-rote strategies, detached and mechanical, an anticlimax that no amount of bluster from Jon Champion can energise.
