The tenth iteration in a long running franchise sees Kirby stuck in a world where he and the world surrounding him is made of yarn. Kirby is now after the evil wizard who sucked him into this crazy world for eating his apple.

Tying Epic Yarn together, no pun intended, are the materials used to craft the world of Patch Land. Much as you may have experienced wonder at the ceaseless creativity in the Super Mario Galaxy games, you’re likely to be just as frequently surprised and impressed with how many staples of video game design have been reborn and revisited in textile material.

Kirby's Epic Yarn isn't hard enough to be aimed squarely at the hardcore crowd, but is more challenging than its super-cute appearance might suggest, landing it in a well-balanced middle ground where just about everyone should find it entertaining. The ingenious manipulation of its world-as-fabric gimmick provides constant surprises as the gameplay evolves and builds on itself, slowly combining elements to create more and more complex levels.

Kirby's Epic Yarn is absolutely filled to the brim with whimsical charm and light-hearted humour, but it's the unique gameplay elements that make it truly shine. Obviously some long-time Kirby fans might end up being rubbed the wrong way due to the game's completely new mechanics, but it will only take them a few minutes of play to realise just how well it all works and how much playability it brings to the table.

Honestly, the only crowd that I can imagine not enjoying Kirby is jaded gamers who are too cool for something so whimsical. Maybe they didn’t grow up with the equally family-friendly Nintendo games of the ’80s and ’90s, or maybe they’ve just forgotten their roots amidst the constant flow of first-person shooters and gory action games. Whatever the case, they’re missing out on a colorful, unique game that reminds me of why I fell in love with gaming back on my NES: imagination, challenge, and fun.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn is an absolute delight. Oozing cuteness at every turn, from the wonderful animation to the gorgeous music, this is a game that should have pride of place in any game collection. It’s a simple little title, free of high-tech gimmickry and gritty realism. It’s a good old-fashioned platformer that manages to be endlessly rewarding and only disappoints in that more incentive to succeed would have truly perfected the title. Even without that, the fun is its own reward, and Kirby’s Epic Yarn stands as one of the very best Wii games of the year.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn is a fantastic game that might skew a little younger than experienced gamers might be comfortable with, but the subtle level challenges and the incredibly creative art direction is well worth the experience. This is an amazing looking game that embraces traditional platforming designs in fresh new ways.

Even with the deviations from what you might expect from the plucky pink puff, Epic Yarn most assuredly feels like a Kirby game; you have solid platforming, off-the-charts cuteness, and even throwbacks to familiar Dream Land characters and settings. And with the collectibles, minigames, and medals, what would otherwise be a short outing has a lot of replayability. Put simply, Kirby’s Epic Yarn is a game everyone can enjoy.

Make no mistake – this is straightforward, walk-right-to-win platforming. It’s not re-writing the book on anything and it’s probably not game of the year material, but it’s just plain fun, and acts as a charming antidote to the M-rated avalanche we can’t seem to pull ourselves out of.

The lack of difficulty didn’t bother me. I spent around 10 lovely hours exploring the intricately detailed, painfully cute Patch Land in co-op, and came away feeling, well, lovely. Kirby’s Epic Yarn makes a convincing case for the idea that we don’t have to be challenged every single time we play a video game. Occasionally, it’s enough to be happy.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn is, at its quilted heart, an enjoyable 2D platformer that anyone who understands the language of fun can pick up and play, and it has an aesthetic that you can marvel at — stress-free — from beginning to end. That makes me happy, and I can’t ask for much more.

Kirby’s Epic Yarn may not be the hardest game you’ve ever played, but it is certainly one you won’t forget any time soon.

A lack of challenge has led to the demise of many platformers in the past. Oddly, that’s not the case with Kirby’s Epic Yarn. It is easy to play and requires no real skill to master, but it’s a load of fun regardless. You’re bound to enjoy Kirby’s Epic Yarn for its great platforming and cool transformations, but you’ll love it for all of the bright, colorful, and ridiculously adorable charm that it exudes. Play this game, and enjoy it for what it is: A bright and cheery platformer that’s low on challenge and extremely high on fun factor.
