Castle Crashers features a unique mix of beat’em up action along with RPG elements letting you hack, slash and smash your way to victory. Along the way adorable Animal Orbs can be discovered who will do everything from helping you find buried items to chomping on the enemy’s head. For the masochistic, the game also features an “Insane Mode†unlocked after defeating regular mode, which is… well… insanely hard! When beating up the bad guys just isn’t enough, battle it out in the Arena mode for a team or free-for-all, 4-player deathmatch.

Overall, the game feels exactly like it did on Xbox 360, with some additional features that are worth checking out. It’s a great game that I’m happy PS3 owners will now have a chance to play, and I look forward to playing through the co-op adventure mode a few more times in the near future. So go ahead and see what all the hype was about, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this one.

The PlayStation Network version swaps out the "All You Can Quaff" eating mini-game of the Xbox Live Arcade edition for a simple volleyball game (inspired by a segment from the campaign), which isn’t terribly thrilling, but is arguably the better of the two options. Also new in the mix is a Team Arena option, but the biggest upgrade here is that online play works reasonably well on day one.

Another interesting idea is the ‘animals orbs’ you collect throughout the game. 28 different creatures work as your ‘equipment’ seeing as some creatures give you added offense, defensive, some will find fruit for you in trees, make your much stronger, etc. At first I didn’t quite understand why a little owl was following me around, although once I learned what the system was all about, I did my best to find all the creatures I could. The game also conveniently stores in them one location as you find them, so if you accidentally replace your owl with a cardinal, all you gotta do is head to the animal storage and fight your favorite little buddy to help you out.

The four starting knights wield magic powers that are differentiated by armor color — Red has lightning, Green has poison, Orange has fire, and Blue has ice. Armed with magic and steel (or maybe a stick), you’ll hack your way through mounds of enemies, gain experience points, and level up. As you progress, you’ll garner more skill points to divide amongst four traits: Strength, Magic, Defense, and Agility. You can build up your character however you’d like, but that’s not the only way you can customize.

Castle Crashers for PSN doesn’t boast any major changes over the original Xbox Live game, but considering it was great to begin with, that’s fine by us. The hand-drawn animation is absolutely gorgeous, and the settings are exquisite for a game of this nature. There’s also plenty of humorous moments throughout, from a huge cat beast that can’t resist coughing up hairballs to forest animals with a penchant for pooing. It’s easy to lose track of what’s happening in a four-player battle, but that just comes with the territory.

Castle Crashers’ striking visual style plays a key role in making the game so enjoyable. It’s a design choice that makes the whole game better. The characters, environments, and backgrounds pop off the screen thanks to their gorgeous colors and a constant sense of movement and energy. The effect is like seeing the inspired fantasy-themed doodles of a 13-year-old come to life before your eyes. The music contributes to the mood as well, with a delightfully eclectic and really catchy mix of tunes that somehow always seem perfectly appropriate to the action, even when an electronica tune accompanies the sight of medieval knights battling a huge barbarian.
