NBA 2K11 has managed to piece together the best parts of past basketball video games to create an experience that is immersive, rewarding, and novel. Though there are frustrations that mostly stem from the level of difficulty, these are changes for the better. Without the addition of Michael Jordan, this would have been a great basketball sim. Add MJ to the mix, and you’ve got a complete package that will satisfy any fan of the game.

Honestly, the stuff with Michael Jordan is reason enough to pick up NBA 2K11. The fact that 2K Sports did so much more with this game and improved it so greatly over last year’s title is stunning. This isn’t just the best basketball game ever; it’s the best sports game of this generation.

Whilst the level of realism on show in NBA 2K11 may make the game sound a little daunting, what you have to remember is that this is in every way a basketball simulation for fans of the sport rather than a sports title for the casual sports game player.

Of course, one of the big draws is always online play, but NBA 2K11 does falter a bit in this category. There is the ever-present, game-breaking lag when playing with more than one player online. It isn’t as bad when playing with only one player, but most players online like to bring buddies. Perhaps a future patch can help rectify this issue.

In all, NBA 2k11 is amazing. It looks great and it offers depth that actually makes the game deeper. In other words, you can’t just ignore the strategy of calling offensive plays in favor of jumping over and sprinting past the defense. The moves, the bench, the coaching and all the other little options are there for a reason – because you need them. If you take the time to learn it all you’ll be enjoying one of the best sports games of the year. And this year, that’s saying a lot.

That My Player mode has received a nice boost in 2K11 as well. Additions like post-game press conferences and the opportunity to win endorsements add a nice level of depth to this quasi-sports RPG. Like an RPG, though, it takes a decent amount of grinding before you can be competitive. The Association, NBA 2K11’s franchise mode, has a clean new look and some enhancements to the A.I. of competing owners, but it’s largely unchanged, and still excellent. The raft of online modes are back as well, including last year’s somewhat problematic Team Up, which allows you to play cooperatively online with your friends. It’s still early days for 2K11’s online, but so far things seem to be much improved and significantly more lag-free than was the case for NBA 2K10.

Probably not high on the list of games to buy for me but one I may approach a little later in it’s lifetime. FIFA & PES 11 are in there too, but as far as sports titles go, I am forcing myself to make do with what I have as I feel that I still have a wealth of hours to drain from them.

NBA 2K11 is a huge improvement over last year’s edition. Just about every facet has been improved or overhauled, which makes this a richly rewarding experience with enough depth to make even diehard NBA fans feel like rookies. It’s easy to lose dozens of hours improving your game in practice, working your way through the ranks in My Player mode, or creating a dynasty in franchise play. It’s a shame there are still some hiccups that prevent this from truly soaring, and the online inconsistencies are downright crushing when you want to show off your skills to the world. But the core mechanics are so well realized and the presentation so lifelike that it’s hard to keep away once you get sucked into the tantalizing ebb and flow of an NBA game. NBA 2K11 is a great realization of the sport that makes the hard work it takes to succeed well worth the commitment.
