I’ll venture to say that this will be one of the better received Castlevania titles in recent history and that’ll be some well received praise. It’s a great game separate from the franchise, and definitely does a favor for the third person action genre, but with the CV characters and license attached, it becomes even more enjoyable for me. Definitely worth a second playthrough after you’re finished as well, and that’s something I’m looking forward to doing soon myself. Absolutely worth picking up for both the long running Castlevania fanboy and the newcomer, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with this action game in the least bit.

Though this is generally a no-no for the series, the number of sweeping vistas and slow zooms out from massive, ancient ruins or imposing architectural works, Gabriel Belmont encounters can be overwhelming; Lords of Shadow isn’t just a huge game, it’s one that can be wearyingly epic. If you need any proof of that, just wait till you get to the second Titan boss.

It’s wonderful to play a 3rd-person game that so effectively blends a rewarding combat system with a genuine sense of adventure. In a way Lords of Shadow is decidedly old fashioned in its closed off level structure, combo purchasing system and predictably placed boss fights but it pulls it all off with such grace and style that it makes you question why most games shun this formula.

Lords of Shadow is exactly what the Castlevania franchise needed to find popularity with a new generation of gamers – and us oldies too. One of the best games of 2010.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow reinvigorates the franchise by borrowing from other games, adding its own wonderful magic system, and ratcheting up the epic factor to ludicrous degrees. It’s huge in scope, length, and depth, and it’s polished with obvious love and passion.

The few complaints I’ve aimed at Castlevania: Lords of Shadow can’t withstand its engaging combat and unapologetic march through danger. Being a hero will never lose its charm, even in a linear world that guarantees your victory. I know, I know — if you’re adamant about the previous formula, then maybe you won’t believe this is Castlevania. But if you’ve grown tired of it and hoped to see a beautiful restoration of the timeless quest, you’ll probably be on my side when I say: Guys, I can’t believe this is Castlevania.

Castlevania takes a few hours to get rolling, but once it sinks its fangs in you’ll be absorbed. After putting nearly 20 hours into Lords of Shadow I emerged satisfied and ready to play again. This polished, action-packed adventure has me ecstatic to see not only what’s in store for the next 3D Castlevania, but also what talented developer MercurySteam does next. Don’t let the deluge of fall releases or the 3D Castlevania stigma keep you from this amazing quest.

Mercury Steam has achieved something very impressive with Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. This is a successful and highly entertaining reboot of the series but, more than that, Mercury Steam has managed to move the game out from under the large shadow of Hideo Kojima. Kojima’s influence is apparent but it falls short of being the defining feature of the game. The fledgling Spanish studio has made Castlevania very much their own and created a beautiful and epic new entry into the series that is capable of engaging both the diehard fans of the series and newcomers alike.

Lords of Shadow is one of the best games I’ve played all year, but its technical faults hamper the experience. Normal difficulty should be expectedly normal. Cameras should not cause Gabriel to run into invisible walls. Frames shouldn’t stutter during cinematics. However, its amazing story, combat, and spirit of Castlevania holds up. And if you stick around for the credits (and beyond), you will see where they might go with the franchise. If so, let’s hope that these few nagging issues are fixed by Mercury Steam’s next Castlevania outing.

All in all, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a really good game. Only because the hype and anticipation was so high might the score be considered a cause for concern. Still, I had hoped for a game that flirted with a 9 in my eyes and in the end, I just don’t like it very much. But it’s absolutely worth a try, at the very least.

Castlevania still blends puzzles, traversal, and elaborate boss battles far more aggressively than either Kratos’ or Nathan Drake’s handlers would dare to.

Sure, the purists will moan that it’s not really a Castlevania game and some will be horrified by the way the game lifts from other titles – there were a couple of moments when I shouted “you can’t do that… it’s just cheating” – but it’s all made up for by gameplay that offers wonderfully-balanced, intelligent third-person combat and some of the best boss battles around.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is barely a Castlevania game. It doesn’t feature much from previous games in the franchise aside from the main character being a Belmont and some of the game’s enemies being creatures of the night. Don’t expect a hefty dose of nostalgia. However, if Lords of Shadow wasn’t at all attached to the Castlevania name, it still would be a great game that is worth playing. The production value, storyline, and other aspects are worthy to stand aside any of the top games of this generation. A few glaring flaws, repetitive gameplay, and strict linearity keep the game from being the masterpiece we all had hoped for.

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is as close to perfection in a vampire killing game (oh, and you’ll have to wait until deep into the game to do any of that) as you’ll find. While it shares little in common with its predecessors, it’s still a lot of fun to play and a worthwhile experience for any Castlevania aficionado and hardcore gamer alike.

While it would have been nice to get more than one minor reference towards the Castlevania series, Lords of Shadow manages to forge its own identity. At the end of the day, Lords of Shadow has its fair share of problems, but any seasoned action veteran will enjoy it.

I recommend Castlevania: Lords of Shadow, but not if your expectation is something similar to the classic Castlevania games. Pretty much anything you would expect to find in a Castlevania game is not to be found here. But fans of combat-heavy action adventure games will have fun if they can excuse a lot of mindless button mashing and a couple technical issues. The developers have successfully adopted ideas from several popular games (God of War, Shadow of the Colossus, Uncharted, Resident Evil) but that also means this isn’t a very original effort. In the end, I’d rather play a more traditional 2D Castlevania game, but there is no denying that this is a beautiful and enjoyable change of pace.

Yes, ‘Castlevania: Lords of Shadows’ sounds a lot like ‘God of War,’ and that is because it is. But that’s not a bad thing, just a point of refrence from another remarkable action series. Sure lots of 3rd person action games borrow from one another and Castlevania is just another action adventure game that uses similar techniques to push its plot along.

LoS is a great amalgamation of the genres and games it combines. It makes sure they all come together effortlessly, but it never really owns the gameplay it borrows. It’s a fun game that will last you a while if you so choose. Just don’t expect a revolution.
