Beide blijken namelijk goed samen te kunnen werken en Totec heeft een magische speer, die wel erg goed van pas komt. Met zijn speer kan hij namelijk Lara Croft helpen om op bepaalde plekken te geraken en Lara Croft heeft ook zo haar speciale wapens, waarmee ze Totec kan helpen. Voornamelijk zijn dat gewoon wapens, want Lara Croft schiet er nog steeds lustig op los. Doordat de camera ons een beeld geeft van bovenaf, zie je goed in beeld op welke punten de twee hoofdrolspelers dienen samen te werken. Is er een groot gat met aan het eind een grote, stevige gouden ring verankerd aan de overkant? Dan kan Lara Croft een grappling hook gebruiken, naar de overkant zwaaien en later Totec een handje helpen met dezelfde grappling hook.

Discounting the fact that the game still doesn’t include online co-op — a huge flaw, but one that should eventually be corrected — Guardian of Light still stands as one of the best multiplayer games available for download. Though I was familiar with this downloadable title’s new approach to the franchise, I honestly didn’t expect to find so many clever and rewarding puzzles cribbed straight from the School of Zelda. Guardian of Light provides both Lara and Totec with an impressive collection of moves, and then presents players with a series of seemingly-straightforward puzzles that can be traversed by using the correct combination of their specific skills.

When playing alone the puzzles are cleverly designed, often making use of Lara’s grappling hook and her ability to stand on spears that’s she’s hurled into walls, but it’s when you play with a friend that things really get interesting. A second player steps into the shoes of Totec, an ancient Amazonian warrior who is woken by an army of men trying to get their hands on (shock, horror!) cursed treasure. Rather than simply being a re-skinned Lara, Totec has his own set of skills that help to make Guardian of Light one of the best co-op experiences around.

Thank goodness the thriving industry of natives has learned to manufacture Adamantium spears that can easily be thrust into solid stone! Your guns can be augmented by finding artifacts that add (and subtract) from your firepower, defense, bomb strength and speed, and the more rare relics that activate special abilities when you fill your "relic meter" by chaining together kills without taking damage. There are six abilities (Power Shot, Power Bomb, Power Speed, Health Regenereation, Ammo Regeneration, Scatter Shot if you must know), and more powerful relics will grant multiple powers so you can eventually be rocking with an extra powered spread Railgun that regenerates ammo. Pretty badass.

In co-op, those abilities have to be used in tandem to get past obstacles and fight enemies that would otherwise be impossible alone. The classic example is the steep cliff face; where Totec can lodge one of his throwing spears in the wall for Lara to jump on to get above. Totec is too heavy for the spear to take his weight, but then Lara can use one of her abilities – the grappling hook – to drag Totec up to the top of the ledge so the pair can continue together.

A typical level involves running across multi-tiered environments, leaping from platform to platform and using the grapple hook to swing across gaping chasms guarded by spike pits. There’s also a lot of fighting too against an impressive bestiary, and a range of puzzles to get embroiled in that often task you with rolling stone balls onto pressure pads in order to unlock gates. Boss battles also feature, including a fiercely fought contest against a stampeding T-Rex and the final intense battle against the mighty Xolotl himself. Though the missions are fairly short, clocking in at approximately 5-15 minutes each, there’s plenty of other stuff to get involved in that gives the game some added replay value and prolongs the time that you’ll want to spend completing each level.

LC&tGoL is a puzzler at its core, and impressively, it doesn’t disappoint. Throughout Lara’s journey, she’ll face a wide variety of obstacles and traps that she must traverse in order to finally face off with Xolotl himself. She’s able to go at this either alone or in co-op mode, with a friend taking control of Totek. This was actually the most impressive part of the game, because even though the answer to each puzzle didn’t take too much time to figure out, players will still walk away feeling satisfied and accomplished once the challenge is complete. This was especially true while spelunking through with a buddy in co-op. The levels and their puzzles were pretty much the same regardless of whether venturing alone or with a friend, yet it was apparent that a lot of thought went into each one. It was clear that the design went into co-op first, with slight adjustments to be made for Lara, should she have to tackle it alone.

Every level has powerups that add to your health bar and ammo capacity. There are Artefacts that modify your attributes such as speed or defence. There are also plenty of Relics. Relics give you special abilities, like heath regeneration or scatter shots, that activate when you collect gems or chain kills. But the collectables don’t just end with upgrades; they also include almost thirty different kinds of pistols, flamethrowers, grenade launches, shotguns, magnums and rifles. For a PSN game there are a remarkable amount of weapons and upgrades, all of which add to the replayability of the game.

Puzzles in the game are fairly basic during the early stages, however as you progress they become more and more intricate, so much so that entire levels become huge puzzles and even some boss battles have a puzzle solving element to them. Despite this though you never get the feeling that Lara has abandoned her shooter heritage and the game serves up a varied range of baddies for you to dispatch and the game serves up a perfect balance of both puzzle solving and shooter action.

Lone players can enjoy Guardian of Light, as well, thanks to Crystal Dynamics’ decision to re-work the game for a single character rather than dropping an AI partner in to take the place of an in-the-flesh teammate. Gamers have learned that those types of AI partners are almost always utter failures, so seeing the way the single-player mode works in Guardian of Light will be something of a relief, with Lara fully equipped and capable of surmounting whatever obstacles stand before her. As playable as the single-player mode is, however, the game is most certainly best enjoyed as a cooperative endeavor, as the solo adventure just lacks the extra social element and dynamic play that can only be had with another person sharing the experience.
