Limbo, an indie game from playdead, puts players in the shoes of a young boy looking for his sister in a completely black & white environment. The game will use physics-based puzzles which will open up new paths when solved, but hazards and deadly traps will be cleverly placed to try and stop you in your tracks.

It’s extremely entertaining, and a strangely humorous way of making grotesque, interesting deaths a workable part of gameplay. It’s the game that plays the gamer, and for that, it’s also utterly and sadistically worth every cent.

It might not have the length or volume of content that other excellent titles like Mass Effect 2 or Red Dead Redemption have, but pound for pound, Limbo is the best game I have played all year.

The actual meaning of Limbo, I think, lies in the journey itself. In that sense, it reminds me most of Out of This World or the original Prince of Persia, in that it truly takes you to another place, puts you in another person’s shoes. Dark, disturbing, yet eerily beautiful, Limbo is a world that deserves to be explored.

Limbo has a transportive quality that’s hard to articulate. It so expertly realizes both its internal gameplay logic and its prevailing aesthetic that it almost creates a sort of reverie as you play, fully removing you from your physical environment and plopping you into this cold, mesmerizing other land.

Limbo is as close to perfect at what it does as a game can get. It’s artistic without being pompous, difficult without being cheap, and violent without being gratuitous.

I finished the game in a four to five hour game session in which I took quite a few breaks. I estimate that completion time would average between three to four hours. If you are in my camp, then that is a little too little for the price. If you are in the other camp, I can not recommend this title enough.

Dark and disturbing is something that is a running theme throughout Limbo, it isn’t a nice game, it isn’t one that will leave a smile on your face but it is engrossing and it will have you suckered in from start to finish.

Defying my expectations as an “art game” skeptic, Limbo is a brilliantly thematic artistic achievement and a beautifully designed gameplay experience. Regardless of its brevity, price, or minor frustrations, this is one of the best games currently available on Xbox Live Arcade. It’s also one of the most essential must-play experiences this generation.

As a videogame, Limbo defines its medium in much the same way that I believe Watchmen defines comics and Memento defines film. If you enjoy games in any capacity, I urge you to let Limbo into your life.

Limbo is a game about death that manages to invest the act of dying, at least in the context of gaming, with a rare impact – quite an achievement considering how often it happens.

The only possible flaw I can really find with it is that it is over relatively quickly – it took me about six hours to beat it. However, in that time, LIMBO delivered an incredible experience from beginning to end, had no filler, and provided more memorable moments in that short time than many games of a far greater length.

There’s no doubt that this kind of gameplay isn’t going to appeal to everyone, and it also bears mentioning that the game can take as little as three hours to complete. Yet, this a beautiful, haunting game that will leave its imprint on your mind long after its completion, making it one more deserving of its admission price than countless big-budget retail disc releases.

There are so many things to be appreciated about Limbo, both in the ideology of games as art, in which Limbo is a prime example, and the design philosophy that games need to be fun.

In fact, I’m going to go out on a limb here (no pun intended) and say that Limbo is even better than Braid in certain areas, such as sheer atmosphere, telling an ambiguous story of which players can construct their own experiences, and delightful play.

To say I loved Limbo would be an understatement. Regardless of how basic the gameplay is, the presentation along with the insidious level and puzzle design gave me so many “OMFG” moments that I just had to keep playing, no matter how much my brain hurt.

Genuinely, Limbo is probably as close as you can get to perfection on Xbox Live. Outstanding design, glorious visuals, an unquestionable sense of maturity and emotion; it’s rare to see all of these attributes culminate into a single piece of gaming genius.

Limbo demand reaches a certain preset face a runoff. And although the first game can give us six or seven hours of play, thanks to the repetitive puzzles and deaths, as among the challenges is proposed to overcome the die up to five times the total length can be quite superior, in fact. The challenge that we can make time shall in any case as difficult as the few deaths, as many traps are so well hidden and have to walk with feet of lead or have a good memory.

There’s not a drop of colour in the whole game, yet it has more character, more style and more beauty than any of its peers. It’s artful, but not in any way pretentious. It manages every aspect of its design with such minute precision, and delivers on its ideas with the utmost confidence and charisma.

Clearly Limbo is a game that doesn’t give up its secrets easily then and, although a single play through will take most gamers in the region of 3-5 hours (depending on how you fare with logic puzzles), there’s more than enough replay value doled out through the Achievements to keep you hammering away for a further 5-10 hours at least in order to 100% the game.
