In the end, Singularity is an awesome FPS wrapped in an engaging piece of science fiction. The story grabs you from the very beginning and takes you on an adventure that is full of twists and several epic reveals. Its inventive mix of solid gunplay and time manipulation makes it an excellent addition to the first person shooter genre. It’s a pity that it did not receive a better marketing job. I highly recommend this title to any FPS fans out there.

It’s tricky getting into a multiplayer game as there are only enough players at certain times of the day. I think this problem got worse after the version 1.1 patch, as the game does not have an auto-update feature and many people do not know about the patch. Also, for some reason the Steam version of the game was not updated until a couple of weeks later.

The TMD and character improvements are first found under the guise of blueprints, which once discovered are automatically added to special kiosks placed in certain levels, called Augmentors. What I liked here was that although Singularity is basically a corridor-shooter, the producers also created out-of-the-way areas, which you don’t have to discover in order to reach the ending, but otherwise reward you with ammunition, health packs, E99 Tech or even Weapon Tech if you’re curious enough to find them

Singularity offers quite a few moments like these. A boss battle against a skyscraper-sized mutant aboard a train falling off a cliff offered intense and frantic action as we’re forced to run against the pull of gravity and away from the punishing pincers of our gargantuan foe. The progression system certainly encourages multiple replays, as do three endings based on your final decision.

Singularity isn’t a groundbreaking shooter, but it’s an incredibly fun one. This is an example of how fluid pacing and a tongue-in-cheek attitude can make old conventions exciting again. Disappointing visuals and a smattering of minor flaws keep this first-person shooter from feeling completely modern, but not every game must probe the human soul to achieve greatness. Singularity achieves it with variety, moving you from one enjoyable sequence to the next without lingering too long on any given moment. Besides, this is a game in which you can both snipe hardened Soviet soldiers in bullet time and heal your teammates by puking on them. And is there any greater selling point?

At the end of the day, Singularity is a flat-out fun experience. It may feel like the developers have been a little too inspired by some other games, but it is constructed in such a way that you don’t mind the somewhat familiar vibe. The pacing is nicely done, the graphics and sound are great, and the limited multiplayer is fun. It’s an overall good game that gets a little help by coming out at a time generally ignored by publishers. Fans of first-person shooters and action would do well to pick up Singularity, as it’s a great title to fill up your time before the inevitable game onslaught begins.

As well-built as Singularity is, it does follow a lot of the hallmarks of your standard six-to-eight-hour FPS, which may feel just a little too familiar for today’s jaded gamer. There’s a plot twist at the end with hints the whole way, quick and easy puzzles every 15-20 minutes, sewer levels with little annoying fast-moving crawlies that attack you (these are undoubtedly the worst parts of Singularity, which I could have told Raven before even playing it if I heard a description of these levels), and a solid, but mostly pretty standard arsenal of weaponry.

Numerous skills in the game allow you to detect and take out enemies in different ways, while other abilities give you an opportunity to manipulate objects in the environment. For example, the TMD (Time Manipulation Device) is used to decompose or restore objects that were wrecked or have simply decayed over the years. Although this feature was put to good use, it never really pushes the gameplay into new and exciting areas. Also, don’t expect any particularly challenging puzzles or problems waiting to be solved, because the game is mostly about standard FPS action.

Graphically, Singularity does nothing to stand out. Using the Unreal Engine 3, the game boasts the same level of detail we’ve come to expect from the engine, and does very little to bring anything new to the table. That said, everything looks fine – you won’t be seeing something like Alpha Protocol’s botched handling of the engine, but your jaw certainly won’t hit the floor. Common engine-specific problems, most notably texture pop-in, are present and can actually get worse over time depending on your system’s configuration.

It’s a bummer that there wasn’t much hype for this game as it does deserve credit for its single player campaign and overall solid gameplay. Sadly, Singularity would be a stronger game without the weaker end that is its multiplayer. It does reinforce how entertaining the gameplay is, but it’s just not enough to achieve greatness. Gamers will try the multiplayer and then move on. Let’s hope that Raven Software can put some creativity together and bring forth more of an expansive multiplayer for a possible sequel or download; I would hate to see such potential be forgotten and aged to dust.

The game does suffer from a few PC specific issues, all of which can be traced to the use of the Unreal Engine III. The biggest issue is the constant texture pop in the game. At first it wasn’t too bad as there was merely the odd door or crate but towards the end of the game I found a room full of untextured items (this has since been fixed in a patch). I would guess that the console versions of the game don’t suffer as much from this problem but it was distracting in the PC version.
