Transformers: War for Cybertron Reviews ps3
gamerstemple.com review
At this point, every gamer reading this should know how a third person, dual analog shooter is played. The Transformers have taken this tried and true gameplay and made it their own by adding easy to use melee attacks and, of course, the ability to switch between robot and vehicle mode on the fly. And for the very first time in gaming history, the Autobots and Decpticons switch between forms exactly how you would want them to: by clicking the analog stick at any time, i.e. easily.

Transformers: War for Cybertron has taken the magic of playing with plastic and metal toys that turn into cool s**t both alone and with friends and have distilled that into something pretty special. This is a surprise, dark horse contender for best way to spend your time online this summer.

Transformers: War for Cybertron is not only the best Transformers game next-gen gamers can play, it is also one of the most fulfilling and challenging action-shooters I’ve played in years and a definite purchase, especially if you have any love of the Transformers franchise.

I’ll admit that Transformers: War For Cybertron wasn’t sitting very high on my radar and really surprised me. I was half expecting to get more of the same out of Activision but they made an excellent choice with High Moon studios for this project. High Moon managed to recreate a classic formula in a different medium and make an extremely large amount of fans very happy.

War for Cybertron isn’t a perfect game, but it fulfills my youthful fantasies in a way that has me believing the developers had a window into my boyhood imagination. If Transformers dominated your early years, you owe it to yourself to see them brought to life in the way you always dreamed.

Transformers: War For Cybertron is damn near everything I would have asked for from a Transformers video game. High Moon Studios managed to create a living & breathing world – I know, kind of ironic for a game about robots, isn’t it – that did justice to the source material. In fact, where the original cartoon doesn’t stand up to the test of time, this game will. War For Cybertron draws inspiration from many other successful games to create an experience that is solid when you play it by yourself but even better when you play with some friends.

While Transformers: War for Cybertron is not perfect, it will definitely hit the mark with fans and gamers who have been waiting for a title that would do the series justice. And it’s the only time you will ever hear me recommending to someone that they check out the credits in a game. I only hope that the folks who’ll be working on the next title for the film franchise take a hint and make it more like this one. Yes, fanboys, it’s okay to pick this one up. Transformers, Roll Out!

Transformers has evolved a lot since those cartoon sessions after school. And even though Optimus Prime and Megatron don’t look quite the same as they used to, this game captures a lot of that youthful spirit I had watching the cartoons as a kid. Everything from the bickering banter between Starscream and Megatron, the cold calculated communiques from Soundwave, or the heavy-handed speeches from Optimus to rally his Autobots, it’s all here. War for Cybertron is an entertaining game that’s just as enjoyable as it is playable.

The bottom line is that the speed and control works and the game stays fun throughout most all chapters. There’s a wee bit of repetition involved, you often find yourself running out of ammo a bit too often (depending on the situation), and the camera can pose a problem here and there, but none of this is enough to cripple the experience.

I’m a huge Transformers fan, so take that into account, but I really enjoyed War for Cybertron. It’s the first game I’ve played that nails the personality of the bots and it genuinely delivers a solid gaming experience alongside the nostalgia. When played alone the lack of ammo and punishing enemies can cause frustration, but get together with some friends, or go online and play as teams, and you’ll want that Optimus Prime bed again – only this time hopefully your mum won’t be able to say no.

Certainly there are many worse games on the shelves and it is a shame some of the minor annoyances (load times, instant deaths etc) could have been picked up in play testing. You will enjoy the story but the many fan pleasing aspects will be completely lost on you which leave you with a solid, but not spectacular, third person shooter.

Hell, I could probably poke fun at the fact that the two campaigns are pretty lopsidedly fun on the Autobot side (there are just more set piece moments, but then that’s probably to be expected), or that some of the boss fights are very clearly patterned off the same mechanic no matter which side you’re on. You know what, though? I’m not going to do that. I’m not going to bitch or complain because the bottom line is that they’re a lot of fun to blast through — just… similar. Besides, unless you’re shooting for the various Autobot/Decepticon icons that can be destroyed in either campaign, you’re going to be too concerned with shooting stuff to worry too much.

Transformers War for Cybertron isn’t a bad game, nor is it something exceptional. It’s another third person shooter that fans might enjoy, given the satisfactory storyline and some excellent voice talent. If you’re a Transformers fanboy and would love to fight alongside your fellow Autobots, then this is the game for you.

As much fun as I had with the solo campaign, don’t expect a revolutionary gameplay experience. As I already mentioned, the game isn’t particularly challenging, especially when tackled with friends. Moreover, the third-person action is very conventional; you’ll just bop around the mostly linear levels, blasting things as you go. There really aren’t any puzzles to work your grey cells, and there are always enough destructive resources at your fingertips to get the job done right the first time. As such, gameplay in Transformers: War for Cybertron is really just a simple romp filled straightforward action set-pieces. Consequently, the campaign may not be entirely interesting for everyone. In truth, a lot of gamers will find the gameplay repetitive after awhile; this is probably the game’s biggest drawback.

Transformers: War for Cybertron passes as a title that will provide only the basic levels of enjoyment for any third-person shooter, and may even struggle to keep fans of the series interested for longer than the campaign runs, which is short at best.
