I’m a huge Transformers fan, so take that into account, but I really enjoyed War for Cybertron. It’s the first game I’ve played that nails the personality of the bots and it genuinely delivers a solid gaming experience alongside the nostalgia. When played alone the lack of ammo and punishing enemies can cause frustration, but get together with some friends, or go online and play as teams, and you’ll want that Optimus Prime bed again – only this time hopefully your mum won’t be able to say no.

Transformers: War for Cybertron was set to be a great game. The frantic shooting mechanics rolled in with the fluid transforming sequences, mixed in with a universe beloved by fans and a greatly told origin story makes for fun gameplay. Also the added feature of creating your own Transformer to bring into multiplayer should be a treat for everyone. However, with the massive amounts of dropped matches and game crashes I experienced in multiplayer, it makes it a difficult game to really rely on and return to regularly.

In single-player though, the transformations from robot to vehicle and vice versa seem to be put there just for the visuals. There are areas designed for the jet form, in the missions where you get to control an entire fighter team, but for the rest, I turned into a vehicle only when I was out of ammo or wanted to cross long corridors faster. This reluctance comes from the poor control: the vehicle just swings like crazy, sometimes it doesn’t even react to left-right commands or it stops too late.

The multiplayer, which allows up to 10 players at once, offers standard shooter modes, like team deathmatch, node control modes, and a couple of takes on capture the flag. Though it sometimes feels like melee attacks are a little too effective, the competitive side of War For Cybertron is its strongest suit. The abilites feel useful and it’s way more fun to take on human opposition than it is to grind through the monotonous campaign. It probably won’t replace whatever popular shooter you’re currently hooked on, but War For Cybertron’s multiplayer makes for a good diversion.
