Avalanche Software has broken the movie-game stigma for me by releasing the awesome Toy Story 3. Does that mean Disney’s upcoming Tron: Evolution is destined for greatness? Not necessarily — but it tells me Disney is heading in the right direction in capturing the magic from their feature films and translating it to the home videogame console.

As cliché as it sounds, ‘Avalanche Games’ has gone above-and-beyond what is expected out a “kids game.†Toy Story 3 is near perfect, delivering an opened ended, action packed game that can be enjoyed for hours on end. It doesn’t hurt that Toy Story 3 also looks spectacular and plays just as good. I could easy ramble on for hours about how great this game is, so instead of being any more redundant, the verdict is simple. Have kids? Then pick up this game. Simply outstanding.

Toy Story 3 is obviously not so much for older gamers, but is fun non-the-less, and will surely be a hit with the kids with it’s familiar pick up and play gameplay, and the ability to have a co-op partner jump in for 2-player is sure to adds tons of value to their experience. Toy box mode is the more stand out mode, and will even likely be the ‘go-to’ area, so make sure you fire this mode up as there’s plenty to do here with other tasks, and just a general place to have fun, whether you’ve beaten story mode or not. Disney interactive Studios have gone to infinity and beyond to bring some fan service to this gaming outing, and made it an essential title to go in the family collection.

It very easily could be the best game for youngsters I’ve ever played, and with my nephew I’ve played a decent number (including that horrendous Teletubbies game back on the PSOne *shudder*). Even I felt drawn in for a good time, mostly throwing around townspeople and the occasional robber as I ran around the Toy Box. It’s a faithful reworking of a movie in playable form. It’s good to be a toy

Toy Story 3 should be a reference for studios making movie tie-ins since it excels in creating fun gameplay that might have you coming back to it after the kids have gone to bed. Much like the movies Toy Story 3 works well with any demographic, bursting at the seams with content while being developed to be accessible for all ages. I’ve played a lot of games this year, some good, some not so much, but I can firmly say that Toy Story 3 falls within the spectrum of games that I have enjoyed and would highly recommend even as a guilty pleasure. Sure, the campaign doesn’t come anywhere close to the greatness achieved in the Toy Box mode, but it’s still an enjoyable journey through the plot of the film. Toy Story 3: The Video Game is great for adults, but phenomenal for kids. Holding off for a great game for the family? Get off the computer and go pick up a copy of Toy Story 3; it might be the finest family-oriented game released this year, as well as a shining example of how to do a movie tie-in with pizzazz.

Toy Story 3 is not quite on par with the big boys as a hardcore adventure game. However, I can safely say that this is the best family movie tie-in game I have ever played—and I’ve played a lot of bad ones. The brief story mode with the Toy Box mode added on make this a surprisingly lengthy adventure that is full of fresh content and new things to explore. And while the controls are somewhat loose and elementary, there is much fun to be had here for all ages, especially fans of the Pixar and Toy Story universe.

All in all, though, Toy Story 3: The Video Game is a really good game — I can easily see it appealing to almost anyone that plays it. Most of the time these Disney movie games only appeal to a younger audience, which is a shame. Toy Story 3: The Video Game has enough sophisticated design and true challenge that even hardcore gamers (and hardcore Pixar fans) like myself can find stuff to love. The Toy Box alone makes it worth checking out.

Toy Story 3 may not be able to reach the lofty heights of Pixar’s movies, but it is a fun game for youngsters who want to play around in this colorful world. The variety of activities ensures there is something new to see in every level, and though none of the missions are deep, they do offer plenty of simple fun. Control issues lead to a number of unavoidable deaths, but the forgiving checkpoint ensures that you won’t have to backtrack much if you end up in a bottomless pit. Toy Story 3 has a lot of content and provides a good time for players eager to spend a few more hours with Woody and Buzz

Nevertheless, Toy Story 3 stands as one of the better movie incarnations. It shows genuine innovation at times, and yet other times it feels like a run of the mill platformer coated in Pixar’s flowery veneer.

In spite of the unbelievable number of issues Toy Story 3 contains (including camera problems – did I mention that?), a part of me feels that some very inexperienced 10-year-olds might enjoy portions of this game. But I did not, and that concerns me. If Cars (the original video game that was a pseudo-sequel to the original film) can entertain adult gamers even though it was clearly designed for kids, what does that say about a Toy Story game that fails to amuse the fans who grew up with the franchise?
