After a tedious opening section that really tested our patience, we eventually see the true Prince of Persia – a string of well thought-out, genuinely satisfying platform puzzles, marred only by some dodgy combat and annoying boss fights.

It really isn’t often that a Wii version of a multi-platform title comes out on top, but that’s exactly what’s happened with The Forgotten Sands. While the Wii game still has its fair share of problems, it’s one of the best action adventure titles the console has seen. Get over the waggle-heavy combat and you’ve got a thoroughly enjoyable romp through an often gorgeous game world, complete with some really clever gameplay mechanics.

The Forgotten Sands is a very impressive continuation of the Prince of Persia franchise. It seems equal kudos has been given to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of the game, but I can only speak for the version made for Wii. It’s common to get a “different†experience on Wii but it’s rare when that experience is just as impressive as the bigger systems. This version of the game is chock full of challenging gameplay and fun surprises, wrapped up in a product that really shows off some clever new Wii-centric gameplay mechanics.

Take this entry on Wii and place it beside the 360/PS3 game of the same name, and fans of the Prince have good reason to rejoice. If you own the requisite systems, you’re getting two strong Prince of Persia games on the same day. If there’s one thing Ubisoft has done wrong here, it missed the chance to hype this Wii game independent of the entry on other consoles. Wii gamers have often been forced to make do with a substandard product for their less powerful system. This time, they get a great game built from the ground up to succeed.

The Forgotten Sands takes roughly 10 hours to play through, and there are plenty of unlockables to keep you entertained long after the credits roll. The most interesting of these are extra levels you earn by accomplishing specific tasks during the main adventure, highlighted by 2D levels that focus on the best elements of this game. Thankfully, the main quest is just as fun as these bonus levels. The exciting platforming throws enough new ideas at you to keep you on your toes, and the fantastic artistic design makes every section a treat to look at. It’s disappointing that the combat isn’t any fun, because it distracts from the entertaining portions of the game. But if you can put up with those dull tussles, there is plenty to like in the prince’s latest adventure.

Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for Wii is a worthwhile adventure, but it’s far from perfect. It’s hard to shake the feeling the game was hurried along in order to arrive on time with the release of The Sands of Time movie. The problems the game exhibits likely could have been ironed out with a longer development cycle. The story is interesting, though there isn’t much of it. The visuals and audio presentation are decent, but they don’t come close to having the same impact as last generation’s Sands of Time did. In the end, though, good gameplay shines through in spite of many frustrating side effects, and the extra content alone is almost worth the price of admission. If you’re a fan of the Prince and up for another thrilling adventure, you’ll definitely want to give this one a look

However, the gameplay is solid, the visuals are pretty and there’s just something brilliantly enjoyable about making the Prince skip gracefully around well-designed levels, just like in the old days. This isn’t the best Prince of Persia game ever, and we’d bet the number on the bottom of Ubisoft’s 2011 financial forecast that it won’t be the last. All the same, it’s more entertaining, rewarding and polished than an awful lot of Wii games out there, and it’s worth just a little bit more than 6/10.

It’s a shame that The Forgotten Sands was rushed out the door in anticipation of Disney’s upcoming movie; at its heart, the game’s mechanics have a lot of potential, and at their best remind me of puzzle-platforming greats like Klonoa. But in overestimating what the Wiimote can do, developer Ubisoft has made a game that eventually collapses under its own weight. If they plan on keeping the Prince of Persia series alive on the Wii, it’d be in their best interests to look into Wii MotionPlus support — hey, someone’s gotta use that thing.
