Iron Man 2 for the Wii is a curious departure from most licensed game’s I’ve played, a movie tie-in handled separately from the other consoles by a developer with expertise on the Wii. That said, it’s only a notch above your typical movie game, which isn’t saying a whole lot. If HVS had a while longer to work on it Iron Man 2 could’ve joined the ranks of Spiderman 2 and GoldenEye 007 as a truly memorable movie game, but as it stands the game feels rushed and it doesn’t have much extra content to keep you playing. It makes a good week-long rental, but as talented as HVS is they didn’t have the time to make this one into a must-buy.

There’s just no reason to get either of these versions of Iron Man (or the other console versions for that matter). I was hoping the Wii controls and High voltage development could make the game exciting and fun, but it came off very bland and ho-hum. Not terrible, but just not interesting. The PSP version is even worse because of its bad controls and limited amount of enemies. If you want to be Iron Man, go get Marvel Ultimate Alliance or something, because this isn’t cutting it.

On the whole, I feel like this game falls into that typical movie tie-in slump that a lot of licensed film games do, and while I haven’t played the PS3 and 360 versions of the game, I will say that I thought the Wii game was disappointing at best. The controls aren’t problematic, which is the best thing I can say and something that should be expected coming from High Voltage, but everything else about the game just screams quick movie cash-in. I imagine there are a lot of elements here that are out of the developer’s hands, like the storyline, limited cut scenes, mostly awful voice acting, and a few other elements, but I really think a concentrated effort could be put forth with Iron Man as a character to make a really fun action game. That game doesn’t seem to exist just yet though, so even if you’re a big fan of the movie or comic, I’d suggest avoiding this particular release.

Frankly, I could have overlooked a lot of the technical problems if the game were just a fun, simple shoot ‘em up where I got to run around as Iron Man and shoot tanks. And a co-op mode with both characters blowing up stuff together could have been at least worth an evening of fun with a buddy. But even the most generous, gameplay-not-graphics players will have a difficult time locating where the fun and value is in this title because it’s just so sloppily presented and at least ten years behind practically everything else on the market.
