The best missions see you covering the grounded player from the sky, either in an AC-130 gunship or using a helicopter’s mini-gun – seeing your partner chewing up infantry and cars to save your arse at the last second is an exhilarating high-five you simply don’t get outside of single player or multiplayer.

Modern Warfare 2 crosses into the must-have category of video games effortlessly. It offers an unmatched shooter experience, a compelling story mode, a slick package of mini missions and a multiplayer which is pretty much unparalleled in depth. It’s sure to satisfy the demands of its fan base, and anyone who considers themselves a fan of shooters in general should definitely pick up a copy. It may be debatable as to whether Modern Warfare 2 is objectively the best release of 2009, but it’s certainly the finest game in its genre, as well one of the truly great games of this or indeed any year.

he scenery too sets an incredible graphical standard, with an intricate attention to detail in every aspect, and plenty of destructible scenery. Wooden doors and corrugated metal can be perforated with bullets to kill the enemies hiding behind them, barrels and vehicles can be used as bombs to create a tactical advantage, windows can be blown out and TVs, computers and bottles all explode upon contact with your bullets. Each environment feels real, with some stunning weather effects thrown in for good measure and some of the most realistic smoke, flame and ember renditions I’ve ever come across. The effect of flash and stun grenades is also very convincing, your ears ringing as your vision blurs and then is restored after a few seconds, the sound becoming muffled for a few seconds when a grenade explodes nearby as well. A full orchestral soundtrack accompanies some of the action, enhancing the atmosphere at every turn and building tension during stealth missions, equally noticeable in its absence when you’re involved in a prolonged skirmish and all you can hear is the cries of dying men and the rattle of gunfire all around.

Modern Warfare 2 also includes a special ops mode which is really a set of missions that you can do either by yourself or cooperatively. These are actually quite addicting and calculate a score after the end of a mission. As much as I would have loved to have seen a cooperative element to the games single player campaign these missions are actually a lot of fun and can get quite intense.

Although the single player experience may be limited in its length; the multiplayer is the meat of the game and this time around it is a thick, juicy cut of Grade A Goodness. The multiplayer still plays out much like the first Modern Warfare, but with new additions to the gameplay like additional kill streaks – such as calling in stealth bombers, harriers, and even a tactical nuke – there is a lot to digest. Players also now have Deathstreaks – like additional health upon spawning—that allow them the grace of a helping hand if they are not doing so well – and the ability to shoot down enemy aircraft is now more versatile.

he original Modern Warfare dealt with themes of life, death, action and consequences. The sequel goes after these concepts in a manner rare for the video game world; it treats its audience like an adult. Footage of a particular sequence involving the death of innocent civilians (which I won’t spoil here) leaked online before launch and caused a preemptive uproar from misinformed pontificators.

This concludes your debriefing on Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. To recap, the story is minimal at best and really doesn’t offer anything in the way of a compelling narrative, but you will no less be driven to play through mission after mission, act after act with an almost blind obsession just to see what they throw at you next. Infinity Ward delivers the “greatest hits†of action movies with references to Cliffhanger, Red Dawn, The Rock, and even Spies Like Us. You’re fighting in the arctic one minute and crossing the desert the next, or you might be performing a rescue operation on a terrorist-controlled offshore oil platform or infiltrating a Russian submarine base. Who knows? Just hang on for the ride of your life in what is easily the best game of 2009 and perhaps the most anticipated title in gaming history.

There are five different categories listed from Alpha to Echo, each with their own set of increasingly more difficult challenges. These challenges can range anywhere from stealthy missions requiring you to make it to an extraction point to destroying every vehicle on a collapsing bridge while being attacked by repelling enemies. There are several different game types to be had here including assault, timed assault, wave defense, elimination, stealth, timed escort, driving, and timed driving just to name a few.

There is no form of “story-mode” co-op in Modern Warfare 2, instead Infinity Ward decided to change the formula up a bit and include Spec-Ops (a form of challenge mode that can be played split-screen or via Xbox LIVE with a total of two players). There are five challenges per stage, each with three levels of difficulty and up to three stars to earn per result.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 doesn’t do anything innovative but like the previous Infinity Ward efforts what it does it does pretty well, for the most part. It does feel a little bit of the same ole same ole at times and there are some over usage of the same techniques used to generate drama. The single player campaign is pretty short but the robust multiplayer features make up for the shortness of it. While the story is a bit of a stretch, there are some nice little reveals and fighting on U.S. soil is an interesting change. Some will be shocked by some aspects of the game but I didn’t find it all too disturbing. I have to say though, I was more wowed when Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare came out than playing through Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2. I think it’s a solid game, but as a player of all previous Infinity Ward Call of Duty games, I think the magic has slipped a little bit. Perhaps my expectations were set too high or I’ve just played too many of their games but I wasn’t impressed with Modern Warfare 2 as I thought I would be. That’s not to say it’s a bad game as it’s a fun on most fronts but for some reason I feel it’s missing something that made the other ones instant classics.

Modern Warfare 2 achieves glory in online competition and cooperative play when it sheds the pretension of its single-player campaign, which tells the tale of an all-out war between the U.S. and Russia, and the shadow group of international operatives who try to cool the instability.

From an overall presentation stand point, the game definitely shines. Playing out like an over-the-top action movie, the game constantly tries to one up itself by doing something extreme like blowing up a national monument or an important historical building, to ending the game in a ridiculous but gut wrenching way.
