The truth is though, what they have done is refined an already fantastic racing game, given it a much needed lick of paint and really thought about the community. Once you are on the track with seven friends and battling around fantastic courses it doesn’t matte that there is no rain, or night time. It doesn’t matter because what you have in front of you is almost perfect. The trade off may well of been a worse net code for these added effects, or having to lose each cars individuality.

Forza Motorsport 3 puts you behind the wheel of pretty much any sporty vehicle that you can think of, and for me, that’s half the fun. After driving on the road for real, you value things that you once couldn’t imagine yourself appreciating – such as the time it takes to get to 60, or how a certain model takes that corner. Of course, I wouldn’t know how a Bugatti might handle, or a Porsche Carrera GT accelerates, or how any of the Ferrari Competition cars feel when launching from the starting line – but I do believe they’re as near as damn. And damn is the only word that I can think of, in the American context, when I’m driving any of those four wheeled beasts. I mean, they look accurate, and I’m assured they sound just as they’re meant to, so I come to believe that this feeling may be the nearest I’m going to get to driving those unattainable supercars. Although that said, I’m so tempted to just go get a bank loan

Forza Motorsport 3 is the best racing simulation ever made and as close to a flawless game as I’ve ever played. It gives players of all kinds the opportunity to shape, enjoy and share the experience of hurtling down straights at insane speeds, battling for position through the corners, and tinkering with their toys in the garage. As the ultimate platform for car lovers to explore and share their common passion, Forza Motorsport 3 is arguably itself, the ultimate demonstration of automotive worship. Between this and Burnout Paradise over in the arcade racing space, we may have hit the peak of the racing genre.

All together, if you’ve been looking for one racer to satisfy you this year, then Forza 3 is going to be it. I’ve played the big ones this year, stuff like Dirt 2 and Need for Speed Shift, and Forza 3 is still hands down the best I’ve had a chance to check out this year, and it’s certainly the racing game to get. Even if you’re not much for technical, sim like racing, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how easy it is to get into the mechanics behind Forza 3, and how incredibly accessible the whole experience is. On the flip side, there’s enough customization and other options here to appeal to the hardcore sim crowd as well, and the developers have done an excellent job of straddling that fine line between casual and hardcore entertainment. Absolutely worth owning if you’re a racing fan, and definitely the must have racing title of the year.

This time around Turn 10 was really good on awarding cars that actually felt like they were intended to help you progress through the game and the money you get should only be spent on fixing up the cars. I really only went out of my way to buy cars I wanted to drive, but I’ve got to say I was a little bit disappointed that the money I spent on buying the Collector’s Edition of the game didn’t give me the cars it advertised initially. Sure the cars were present in the game, but some of them were are prohibitively high prices. But the cars I’ve been awarded so far have helped me sail through the game. Some of the cars they hand out become ridiculously over-powered, like the Mine’s R34 Skyline, that car will beast through any R3 or R2 tier races with ease, provided you can handle it.

Forza 2 has a great community of creative people who created some of the best looking vehicles out there with the very powerful and easy to use car painting program. Using colors, paint, shapes and many other tools to create a unique car which can then be put online for people to see or even buy. The potential for what you can create is literally endless it just takes some time and some patience for the truly creative to build their masterpiece. But if you are not a painter but a gear head you can take a low end Honda Civic and make it a killer car with the proper parts that you can tweak to your heart’s content. Forza 3 is certainly a bigger and better game than the excellent Forza 2.

One aspect of the game which seems to divide are the AI cars. There seems to be too many of them on real tight circuits, making overtaking a slow process. On later races with more laps, this is ok, as it is realistic – and challenging for sim fans. Fairly often though you will be tempted to overtake on the grass or just take someone out to get past them. Not too realistic and this certainly reminds you that you are playing a video game, but if you only have three laps to beat close rivals, its almost necessary. I have to say all my mates that have had a go seem to adapt this strategy immediately. On the other hand, you have tight, evenly matched racing which forces you to slow down a bit and choose your overtaking spots carefully.

The control system on the 360 controller works well and even though its a racing simulation, it’s one game that is easy to pick up and start playing. Even the inside view is quite easy to play, especially if you have a wheel. The cars handle quite differently and with the tuning options, you can basically keep on playing with your own car for quite some time. Although with so many cars available, it’s hard not to upgrade to something more impressive in the speed and handling department.

Really, Forza 3 is such a gigantic game that we can see why Turn 10 had to put it on two discs (see sidebar, above). And that’s a compliment. What makes Forza 3 so epic is that along with being an outstanding racing game, all this social and creative activity is so alluring for car people of all stripes. It’s the kind of hub that people get lost in, and we’ll be right there with them.

Interestingly, if you can afford a car in Forza 3, you can buy it. There’s nothing locked until you reach X time round the Nurburgring, and nothing that stops those who dedicate the time. The amount of cash you earn depends predominantly on your finishing position, which is rewarded more generously when less assists are on. If you struggle to keep the car steady with the stability control and anti-lock breaking system off, that’s fine. The biggest increase in winnings comes from when damage is turned to simulation- something that needs to be done if you want to relish the full emotion of Forza 3’s experience. With the GRID style rewind function installed to much simpler effect than it’s pioneer, there’s no reason you would want to opt out of feeling the full effects of ramming a Mini-Cooper of the road until it sits in a pile of it’s own dust, de-shelled and ready for scrapping.

Forza Motorsport 3 does many things to make sure this game is playable, and fun; to help with that the developers incorporated a “racing line†to help drivers stay on the track and use correct acceleration/braking patterns. This allows gamers that have no previous experience with a hardcore racing game to take to the track and keep up with the AI racers; overtime gaining enough skill to actually win. There are a number of other accessibility options that can be tweaked to find the perfect racing experience, which is exactly what Turn 10 was attempting to create. The controls in Forza 3 are slick and scream of a development team who knows exactly what they are doing, nothing about this game feels stiff and if you are looking for speed this is the place to find it. Some racing games, especially those of the simulation variety, have a very tough time trying to portray a sense of speed to the player. There is a huge number of locations in Forza and each one zips past at a blazing pace; of course the fantastic audio and rumble don’t hurt either. Also including on the disc is a run-of-the-mill multiplayer mode, free race option, full video/photo support, and an insanely deep “storefront†– that allows for gamers to buy and sell paintjobs, load-outs, and other in-game memorabilia. We could easily go on and on about the feature in this game but it’s time to wrap this review up with a conclusion we are pretty sure you can see coming.

Nothing against the casual gamer, especially those that drove the sales of the Wii sky high, but simple games truly suck. You know exactly what we are talking about, those half assed games that offer nothing new and are pretty simple to complete. But we never knew that a game that can be both simple and realistic in the same time even existed. The developers behind Forza 3 decided to make this a game for everyone. Not just the hardcore fan or the causal gamer, but for everyone. The first thing the game throws at you is a test lap. Drive around a gorgeous looking track in a fine car to see how good your driving skills are. Based on how well you do, the game will then set your difficulty level automatically.

Forza 3 is, without doubt, a great game. It’s the perfect sequel in that it builds upon the already generous foundations laid down by the previous title. It’s not aiming to revolutionise the genre – a tall order if there ever was one – but to provide the optimum experience for all racing fans the world over. In many respects it succeeds,
