Players must guide Ryu Hayabusa to take revenge for his clan and save the human race from destruction. Large scale bad-ass boss battles and online coop mode are some of the key features of the game.

play.tm review
There are some camera difficulties, but they’re infrequent and hardly major. The difficulty is pure; there is no "cheap" in this game and there is no luck, it’s all fair play and it’s all beatable by calculation and reaction. NG2 is the perfect fighting-action game, it is the ultimate gaming challenge for 2008, and it’s one of the best looking ‘gore games’ ever created. If you want to know why Master Ninja level NG players give no respect to anyone who hasn’t achieved this level of action-gaming perfection, you must become one yourself.

All together, I really enjoyed the time I’ve spent so far with Ninja Gaiden 2, and I absolutely look forward to going thru the harder difficulties. It’s a game that has an addictive quality to it that ends up being a bit hard to define, but there’s a great satisfaction to climbing the leaderboards and pulling of the higher rankings on various levels. I personally have a long way to go before I end up coming close the upper echelon of skill that other players possess, but I look forward to improving. So despite it’s technical flaws, it’s a game that is absolutely worth playing for 360 owners, and while it could have used a bit more time in the virtual oven, I’m happy with the overall experience it provides.

Your third means of attack comes from magic, or Ninpo as it’s called in the game. Fire-filled icons below your health bar show how many Ninpo strikes you have at your disposal. Holding Y and B down initiates a monster slaying Ninpo attack and you have a few seconds to aim using the left analogue stick. As with your weapons, these powers can be upgraded, allowing you to dish out more damage. To begin with you’re limited to a fire attack, but soon enough this will be joined by wind and fire bird attacks. Unless you’re a true expert these special magic abilities will be essential during boss battles, so it’s wise to stock up on replenishing items.

If you are reading this, then you undoubtedly know that the attention-getter for Ninja Gaiden II is action with an E.R.-like stockpile of drippy carnage. The trail of body parts and plasma left in Ryu’s wake is simply a perfect match for the Ninja Gaiden franchise. And, of course the technicians at Team Ninja tied it into the mechanics of the game in a way that makes it all feel quite natural. It’s if your movements were actually matched to the force necessary to split skulls, impale, sever limbs and even separate a baddie into equal parts head, thorax, abdomen; the rest is just a liquid-y mess– courtesy of the razor-thin kerf of Ryu’s de facto Dragon Sword.

When you think of action games, there should be three game series that immediately pop up in your head as the "big 3" of the genre. Devil May Cry, God of War, and Ninja Gaiden. While all three game series could be brutally difficult on the hardest difficulties, Ninja Gaiden was easily the most unforgiving even on the easiest settings.

Although Ninja Gaiden 2 follows the series’ trend of challenging boss fights and scraps with large groups of smaller enemies, this time around staying alive is much easier thanks to an the Acolyte difficulty option. In Acolyte mode, every time you win a battle your life regenerates – whether you’ve knocked some life orbs out of someone or not. On top of this, each time you save the game the save statue heals you completely. Ninja Gaiden 2 pulls its punches on beginners a lot more than the original, but maintains the challenge in a different way – the camera.

Gamers often talk about hype and expectation and how sometimes they’re let down. My expectation for Ninja Gaiden II was sky high long before it was even revealed, not because of hype, but because the original Ninja Gaiden on Xbox was quite simply my favourite game of the last console generation – an astonishing, epic action game that achieved perfection in almost every area and kept me playing though its hugely challenging singleplayer game for something like eighty hours. When its creator Tomonobu Itagaki said he was already planning a sequel for then-so-called next-generation, I could only imagine where Team Ninja would go with it next.

There is a story involved, and though some gamers may be engaged by its above-average voice acting, high-quality presentation and TV-style camerawork, the beauty is in the beast. Or rather, it’s in the slicing and dicing of that beast, as well his siblings and lifelong friends.

Ninja Gaiden II is the type of game that will mollify its fanbase and not much else. There is nothing here to lure in new fans to the series, but what is here is exactly what you would expect from a sequel to the original game. Now that Itagaki has left Tecmo (on not so good terms) this could be the final chapter in the franchise created by him, his swan song if you will. Action fans will be hard pressed to find a more rewarding and challenging experience on any console. If you are a fan of the series there is more than enough here to warrant a purchase.

Difficulty is a primary Ninja Gaiden tenet and Itagaki’s “Swan Song†carries on that tradition. For those who lack patience or resiliency, this game may not be a suitable selection. However, Team Ninja included a few additions which help to balance the challenge. Save points are more frequent and most important of all, they will regenerate your health given that all enemy presence has been eliminated. Combined, these debut elements effectuate easier progression. Rather than work your way up the corporate ninja chain, you immediately exchange blades with the archrival Black Spider Clan. Gone are the days of the lesser BSC abecedarians feebly stabbing your shadows. Again, you are delivered from this evil thanks in part to an assortment of serrated weapons at your disposal.

The adventure begins with the Dragon Blade and a limitless supply of shurikens before the arsenal expands to eight melee weapons, a host of projectiles and several devastating Ninpo magic spells. Each melee weapon can be upgraded, unlocking new combos and adding even more depth to an already robust system of combat. Some old favorites are back, some have been dropped, and a few new weapons have been introduced to the mix. The theme here is obvious: speed and gore.

Otherwise, the game looks pleasing to the eye, with excellently animated characters, brilliant atmosphere, imaginative monster designs and a generally satisfactory audio experience (the music, for example, sets the right tone for each location). It’s true that some of the sound effects could’ve been better, especially the sound of weapons clashing and such. Still, you only need look at the brilliant animation and choreography during battles. It is first-rate to say the least, making each enemy encounter a marvelous sight.

In the game, the level design is distinctly uninspired, with bland hallway leading into bland hallway. For example, one would think that New York might actually have some people in it somewhere. Instead, it’s emptier than an Elf Bowling convention. However, the plain and simple truth is that it just doesn’t matter – the appeal of the game is in the combat and controller crushing difficulty levels, and if, once one makes it to the next group of enemies, one has time to watch the scenery, they’re either playing on too easy a difficulty level or they’re dead. Normally within seconds.

Unfortunately, when shown close-up – particularly in cutscenes – the game still boasts characters that look like plastic action figures so it is not impressive at all times. Of course, when talking about the cutscenes you could also point at the stupidity of the story as another point of concern. However, it borders on such farce that it transforms itself into the ‘so bad its good’ feeling you get from many an old-school B-movies.
