Square’s Luminous Engine Shows the Future

October 13, 2011 by Mat Growcott

It’s like walking through a real parking garage, without the smell of stale pee and empty cans of lager.

It's always exciting to see what the future holds and the video above and the shots below go someway towards demonstrating how video games will look, hopefully sooner rather than later. Square's new Luminous engine may look too good to be true – and believe me, people are already calling shenanigans – but the little bit we've seen could be breath taking.

Let's face it though, it's a long, long way from a delapidated parking garage to a living breathing world, so I wouldn't expect anything too amazing to come from this engine until at least a few more years pass. Then again, maybe I'm wrong.

Equipped with support for DirectX 11 and with features like cloth/fluid simulation and realtime reflections, the Luminous engine takes real-world light behavior and replicates it in order to create incredible textures and realistic light.

If this is the future, sign me up.
