Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter, the third installment in the tactical shooter franchise, lets players command their own team of Ghosts and neutralize hostile forces while completing various mission objectives. Objectives can vary from escorting friendly units across the map to rescuing hostages from enemy territories or demolishing enemy artillery.

Command a group of 3 soldiers, take out a group of resistance, control an APC whilst under cover to blow up another vehicle, run and duck into trenches and assist the team in clearing the area before running full pelt for a hovering helicopter to get the hell out of there. Cue the whining guitar solo of an incredibly bad version of All Along the Watchtower by Everlast, and I’d just learned the basics of Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter. Welcome to the Xbox 360.

The multiplayer side of the game is at least as immense as the single-player campaign, providing missions in both co-op and competitive flavors. There are a ton of options you can alter, such as the length of rounds, frequency and location of respawns, weapons load-outs and a slew of other features. Voice support enables groups to coordinate and accomplish the co-operative objectives as tactically or haphazardly as you might desire. Competitive rounds can vary from fast and frantic to deliberate and strategic, depending on what kind of folks you are playing with, and you can adjust the search criteria if you have a particular style of game in mind. No matter what kind of GRAW experience you’re looking for, there is sure to be at least 15 other players (the maximum per game is a whopping 16) online and ready to either perforate you or help you perforate others.

Technology drives the gameplay and you are never really taken out of the “experience†to navigate traditional game menus. Everything is integrated into the gameplay so even when you are reconfiguring your weapons or scanning a map of the city, it’s handled with an in-game realism.

Advanced Warfighter is what "next-gen" ought to be. It embodies gameplay, graphics, multiplayer and style that we were expecting to see from the Xbox 360. Simply put, GRAW rounds out the total package. I am quite surprised that a title this polished and refined is out and running for the X360 so early in the console’s life cycle. Compare GRAW to any other shooter for the Xbox, X360, or PS2, and they will wilt. This is what next-gen gaming could and should be, and Ubisoft has reason to be proud of this gem, as I would mark it among the most impressive X360 games produced and an instant classic that every X360 owner should add to his or her library.

As good as GRAW is it’s not without its little niggles, I did get the occasional game freeze and objects popping in and out, but like I said those are little niggles with the game. The only problem I feel is really worth noting is the drop outs that happen in online multiplayer. Ubisoft will hopefully get a patch out soon to sort that problem out though. If you own an Xbox 360 and are looking for a showcase title that is not only fun to play but looks great as well then Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is the game for you.

On the multiplayer side of the coin, GRAW comes with so many gameplay options you’re sure to find something that you like. The game supports free for all, team-based, and co-op game types for elimination, territory, and objective game modes. There is even an online-only mini-campaign designed for co-op play. For each of these combinations of game types and modes you can set the respawn level, available kits/weapons, AI enemies, and more. All of this multiplayer action plays really well online, with no noticeable lag or drops in my experience with it. You’ll love making your way through the single player campaign, but the excellent and varied multiplayer modes will keep you coming back to the game for some time to come.

15 levels of single player missions will keep you busy for quite awhile, not taking into consideration that you might experience the odd level-repeating glitch as I did. The game just froze on me after a few hour session. Luckily I had just ended a mission and was able to backtrack quite easily, but it could have been far worse. Once you’ve beaten the games single player mode, try your hand at the awe-inspiring 16 player online mode. The online play can be either split up into groups (Us vs. Them) or you and 15 of your closest buds can take on the online AI together for an all out assault that will keep you occupied for months. The levels aren’t as detailed and the framerate isn’t quite as silky smooth as the single player missions, but you’ll barely notice because of the all of the fun you’ll be having. The only downside to online is that it requires communication between players to be completely engrossing and functional, but the experience will often be marred by yappy morons. You know the ones I’m talking about. If you can put a team together of 16 fighters that you trust not to be stupid, there is no doubt in my mind that you’ll have the best time you’ve ever had playing online.

The multiplayer for GRAW is only half of the package, but it delivers in so many ways that it is worth checking out based solely on its own merits. Fun is to be had when you go online with this one.

Controlling Scott Mitchell is a synch. Throughout the entire game, you can lean up against any object set before you to gain cover. With peaking around corners, kneeling to peer above the car, or running out of cover to flank the enemy, it’s apparent – you need to be tactical! Now I wouldn’t suggest you run right through gunfire since any stray shot could end up taking your life. I’d suggest finding where the fire is coming from and staying out of harms way for as long as possible until a viable plan is cooked up. Here’s a quick write up of one of my plans.

A lot of people have been complaining about the Xbox 360’s lack of jaw dropping graphics that haven’t lived up to the hype before its release. Well, bitch no more as GRAW serves up a heaping dose of visuals supported by fancy special effects. Most noticeably, the environments are extremely detailed and meant to give a realistic impression of the surroundings to come away with that “been there†feel. There’s some cool lighting and blur effects in place, such as the overhead glare that occurs when looking into the sky or directly towards the sun. Additionally there is also a very nice atmospheric perspective effect that blurs the distance gradually with the addition of a hazing effect to enhance the realism. The character models are fluid and their movements are very well done thanks to some articulated motion capture that adds the authenticity of the real thing.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is a next-generation game in the fullest sense, whether it’s the loaded package of impressive graphics and special effects, the top-notch sound, or the tactically enhanced gameplay. Red Storm’s four-plus months of extra time have served the game incredibly well and you can see the difference in the screenshots and you will feel it in the gameplay. It’s still Ghost Recon, which is to say it’s still a rather acquired taste in first/third-person shooters, but as the series goes, this one is easily the best one yet.

The game’s sound is an excellent complement to the fantastic graphics. The different guns have very unique sound effects, and they’re all very sharp and impactful, which adds to the chaos of pitched battles. The best sound effect in the game, though, is the high-pitched whine of the Vulcan cannon as you spin it up and fire out the side door of a Blackhawk during the helicopter-combat portions.

Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter is easily the most complete Xbox 360 title to date, offering an intense and challenging singleplayer campaign and a robust multiplayer component that is sure to keep soldiers on the virtual field of battle for months to come. Although the multiplayer graphics are disappointing, from a technical standpoint the rest of the game is truly next-generation. I don’t see any reason why you shouldn’t run out and enlist in Advanced Warfighter, whether you’re a fan of the Ghost Recon series or not.

GRAW truly is what next-gen titles are supposed to be. Every little detail was treated as if it was solely the most important. With the devotion that the developers put into this game, each little detail comes together to form an amazingly rich and smooth playing environment. With the next generation just getting underway and GRAW setting the bar for titles to come, I can only see bright and great things coming our way.

Gameplay is pretty much what you would expect from a tactical FPS. Run and gun won’t usually work, especially in the "solo" missions. Enemies are pretty much the same throughout although the number varies between too few, too many, and just right.

Once you’re on the ground it’s no different. You can see garbage flying around, shoot chunks out of buildings and even affect the sound of the air conditioner units by shooting them. Shadows and lighting are incredibly realistic as are the particle effects like those from smoke grenades or dust clouds. Both add greatly to the visual impact of the game and have to be seen firsthand to be believed. All of these elements come together to form a realistic dramatization of the war zone and set the stage for the game. But it’s the game’s interaction that changes it from a well-generated cinematic experience to an experience bordering on reality; one that puts you on that stage.

Brilliantly, once the single-player game is done and dusted (although you may want to replay it) there’s an enormous online mode to get stuck into, plus single-system play for up to four players if you can’t get online. There are ten hugely varied maps to play in, using a number of solo and team-based game modes. The expected elimination, territory and objective game modes are playable as teams or as everyone for themselves, but online really comes into its own in the co-op game types.

Advanced Warfighter collectively is pretty awesome, but I still found some faults in the shoddy enemy artificial intelligence. These renegade mercenaries must have been dipping in the cheap tequila because their aim can be horrible, and they like to stand around and get shot. At times the A.I. can be tricky, but for the majority of the game you can pick them off easily. Once you have cover, they are done. That said Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter packs in a solid effort and should keep any gamer content until the next Tom Clancy affair is released.
