We have new details on Doom, including many bits about gameplay.
No need to pick up the chainsaw and BFG anymore, as they’re permanent context specific weapons. Chainsaw is down on the d-pad and the BFG is X. The BFG now seems more like a panic button than an overpowered weapon. Chainsaws can deal one hit kills, but require more hits on bigger enemies. It uses power cells, which are limited.
Weapons are moddable. For example, you can add a remote detonator to the rocket launcher.
Enemies have weak points, so you’ll want to actually aim properly instead of panic shooting this time.
You can get permanent character upgrades. For example, upgrades will increase your health, ammo capacity, and swap weapons faster. There are also temporary upgrades, referred to as runes. Rather than fading, these upgrades can be swapped around.
Multiplayer has upgrade options of their own, called hack modules. You earn these by progressing multiplayer, and presumably, they don’t ruin the game balance.
This time, the game encourages backtracking to seek out secrets. There are even colored keycards.
Plot seems simple, as expected, but there are new elements. Its implied a new character, Dr Olivia Pierce, unleashed the demons now raising hell, as a member of a cult.
There are two newly revealed modes. Warpath is domination mode, with a control area that moves around the map. Clan Arena Mode is simply Last Man Standing. You might find multiplayer more fun, as it has more guns, such as the lightning gun.
Regarding idTech 6, it does seem to be mostly idTech 5 with a new PBR renderer.
PC users get some unique features, in terms of sliders and multi-sampling options.
Finally, here are some details regarding SnapMap.
SnapMap’s SmartHub seems similar to Super Mario Maker’s online hub. There are categories like top rated and most played, and user profiles.
SnapMap has modes like tower defense, modded single-player missions, VIP escorts, and racing challenges. Enemy AI can also be modded, although it’s not clear if these are simpler changes, like enabling one hit kills, or if you can jump in to modify behaviors.
SnapMap files are saved as small instruction files. Based on this, custom textures and rooms are unlikely to be viable.
Doom will be released in Spring of this year for Windows, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
