Microsoft Rejects League of Legends HoloLens Viewer Proposal

January 13, 2016 by Ian Miles Cheong

Microsoft can’t make HoloLens apps based on other company’s IPs.

Microsoft has rejected a proposal from the League of Legends community to create a League of Legends Match Viewer app for use in the company's new HoloLens virtual reality technology. The proposal was submitted through the company's Share Your Idea program for the HoloLens.

In the pitch, gamers proposed that the HoloLens be used to show an overview of League of Legends matches, allowing gamers to view the map in its entirety rather than a square portion of the entire battle.

"The HoloLens will show the entire match playing out in real time…the entire Rift would be at the viewers disposal," read the pitch.

Microsoft's response was to reject the pitch, stating that while they love the creativity behind the proposal, the company is simply unable to build a project based on an existing IP that they have no access to.

They wrote: "We love this idea, the creativity, and the level of support it has received from League of Legends community. However, in order for Microsoft to open source the code to the community as promised, we cannot build a project which is based on existing intellectual property. For more information on how the finalists will be determined, or to discuss how finalists will be determined, please see our related editor’s note. Thanks for sharing your ideas and being part of the HoloLens community!"

Nothing can stop modders from creating their own applications for the HoloLens once the tools come out, but Microsoft developers won't be the ones to make it.
