AMD Driver Update Promises Unified Fixes for Rage, Battlefield 3 Beta

October 7, 2011 by Josh Harmon

The new batch of performance upgrades and bug fixes should help ease many PC gamers’ troubles with Rage.

AMD has released an updated driver that promises to improve support for the Battlefield 3 beta and technically troubled post-apocalyptic shooter Rage.

The new driver unifies previously released, ad hoc performance improvements for the two high profile games, in addition to providing added fixes for the crashes and graphical glitches that have plagued gamers trying to run Rage. This update also marks the first time any fix has been available to Windows Vista and XP users.

id Software's Rage was released on Tuesday to positive reviews, but many who bought the PC version encountered compatibility issues that rendered the game buggy or unplayable. Even id's own technical director, John Carmack, referred to the PC launch as a "clusterfuck."

While certainly a step forward, this new driver still doesn't offer support for those playing Rage with a CrossFire setup. Currently, the game only recognizes one card at a time, severely limiting performance. A fix for that problem, Catalyst creator Andrew D tweets, will be coming sometime next week.

You can download the fresh driver from AMD's site.
