Fallout 4 Mods May Have Caused Nexusmods Security Breach

December 7, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

Nexusmods is still investigating, but they are telling users to change their passwords now.

Nexusmods have revealed that there may have been a security breach at their site, and its related to the Fallout 4 mods.

The operative word here is may, because they are still investigating to confirm if a breach occurred. However, they did observe behavior suspicious enough that Nexusmods felt compelled to move forward with informing everyone.

So, Nexusmods found that three Fallout 4 mods received suspicious changes. Upon updating, all three added a suspicious file called dsound.dll. Nxusmods later found out that the authors of these mods did not patch in such changes.

So, there may have been breach. What could have been compromised? Mostly, passwords. Nexusmods uses a hashed and salted system to protect passwords, which is extremely secure, but not 100 % invulnerable.

Thankfully, credit card information, including expiry dates and secure numbers, could not have been compromised, since that information has stayed with PayPal. This is true even for Nexusmods’ premium members.

As of now, whether there’s a breach or not, Nexusmods recommends users change their passwords. They also recommend you use a particularly complex password to make cracking it not worth the hassle.

Nexusmods then went on to say they had already been working on adding SSL/two factor authentication to their site when this went down, but gave no idea how soon those will be added in.

Do you think you may have been affected by this potential hack? Will you still use Nexusmods after this? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
