Final Fantasy VII Remake Will Release In Parts, To Do The Whole World Justice

December 7, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

The developer team is shooting for the stars with this remake.

Excited for Final Fantasy VII Remake? You may have to temper your expectations when you hear this news.

Square Enix has revealed that Final Fantasy VII Remake will come in the form of multiple releases on PlayStation 4. This stands in contrast to the hefty three disc release it received when it was first released for the original PlayStation.

The rationale? The remake will end up being so huge that it won’t fit into one title. The basic story will be the same, but new scenes will be added in. Each part will be named Final Fantasy VII Remake 1, Final Fantasy VII Remake 2, and so forth.

Tetsuya Nomura and Yoshinori Kitase elaborated on this further in a separate interview with Famitsu. As they see it, if they tried to make it a single release, parts of the game would become summarized. They would also have to cut down on the additions, and even remove some older parts. At the very start, they conceived of this project in such a way that it would be episodic, to do the subject matter justice.

We already have an inkling of this from the latest trailer. When you see Sector 1 and Sector 8, you can recognize that they now have genuine density. Building the rest of the game in the same way would require a multi release.

The way Square Enix describes it, they don’t seem to be planning episodes like Telltale’s games or Life Is Strange has episodes. Rather, it will be more like Starcraft 2, where each release is a considerably hefty segment worthy of a single release.
