A Minecraft Mod Lets You Take Video Calls In-Game

December 2, 2015 by Ian Miles Cheong

Verizon developed a Minecraft mod that lets you take video calls from inside the game.

We've seen a number of impressive creations modders have come up with in Minecraft. From recreating Game of Thrones' cities to designing a working calculator, modders are capable of some amazing feats.

The latest creation comes from CaptainSparklez, or Jordan Maron, who came up with a mod that allows you to make video calls from inside the game itself.

Jordan says that he worked with Verizon (yes, the telephone company) to come up with an insane mod that allows you to make video calls with other people and even browse the internet through an in-game browser made up entirely of blocks. Because the game can't process images at a high resolution, it renders these images with color-shifting blocks.

The whole thing is as an ad for Verizon, but that doesn't stop it from being incredibly impressive.

According to Verizon, they've created a web app called Boxel that allows them to stream videos and websites into blocks in real-time. Here's their description of the process:

In the world of Minecraft, almost everything is made of blocks. We’ve created a web application, Boxel, that translates real web pages and streaming video into blocks so they can be built on a Minecraft server in real time. Our server plugin uses Boxel-client to handle the communication between Minecraft and the real world as translated by the web application.

You can try the whole thing out for yourself. It's real.
