Minecraft: Latest 1.9 Pre-Release Update Adds Potion Brewing, Enchantments, Baby Animals

October 6, 2011 by Ian Miles Cheong

The newest patch for Minecraft adds cool new things like baby animals, enchantments and magic potions.

Minecraft is going to get a whole lot of enhancements within the next few weeks and months, starting with the release of version 1.9, which is currently in its third iteration of "pre-release," which is presumably being built by its developers with the some amount of erotic anticipation.

The latest, and third pre-release version of 1.9 introduces a new potion brewing system to enhance the game's adventure mode. The new system allows players to concoct a variety of potions, some of which have "hidden" ingredients. On his Twitter account, Notch teased that one of the potions would potentially offer the player some form of invisibility to monsters.

Additionally, players can now enchant their items at the newly added Enchantment Table. Judging from the screenshot of what it looks like, the Enchantment Table will require diamonds, a cobblestone and a book. Enchanted items will have random properties and cost experience points to craft. Enchantments will be chosen from three tiers of spells.

Notch Tweeted: "Haha, I just enchanted my first sword! It doesn't DO anything yet, but it works. It's all glossy now."

The final, and arguably greatest addition to this iteration of the 1.9 update is the inclusion of baby animals, which were originally developed as a mod for the game. Unlike their adult counterparts, baby animals don't drop loot or give experience points. Baby animals have "faster animations, higher pitched sounds, and eventually grow up," according to the developers. Simply feed wheat to two adult animals for them to produce baby animals.

Notch tweeted: Don't ask me why chicken (or whatever they are) lay eggs when they breed by being fed wheat..
