Sony Using Online Pass for All Future First-Party Titles

October 5, 2011 by Josh Harmon

The company will be joining a growing trend of publishers who lock their online content to a one-use code.

Sony's Online Pass program, which locks the multiplayer features of a game to a single-use code, will soon be implemented in every first-party release.

In response to speculation that Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception would make use of the system, a Sony representative issued an official statement to Destructoid.

"Online Pass will be incorporated into Uncharted 3 and future Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS) games with online functionality. We will provide further information in the future."

Sony's efforts fall into a broader trend that recently has seen publishers like EA, Ubisoft, and THQ attempting to turn a profit on the secondhand games market. While the system adds no additional costs to those who buy games new, anyone purchasing a used copy without an unused code will need to pay an additional fee to unlock multiplayer modes and other online content.

The first game to ship with a Sony-branded Online Pass, Resistance 3, launched last month, and was apparently successful enough to warrant the system's widespread use.
