In unfortunate news for Tomb Raider, Fallout 4 reportedly sold 1.87 million units in three days. The vast majority of these sales, 1.2 million, were for PC rather than PS4 or Xbox One. While 2 million is a huge milestone, retailers purchased 12 million total copies in advance of the game’s launch, so there’s still a long way to go before anyone runs out of Fallout 4 and game retailer shelves start to look like post-apocalyptic grocery stores.
SuperData’s Joost van Dreunen estimates that 1.87 million units equates to about $100 million in revenue. For comparison, Fallout 3 sold around 610,000 copies in its first month and Fallout New Vegas sold nearly 12 million copies worldwide in its entire run. Perhaps the runaway success of Fallout 4, both critical and commercial, means we’ll be hearing about a Fallout 5 sooner rather than later.
(Although, since the first DLC does not even drop until 2016, it’s probably way too early to expect any kind of sequel talk from Bethesda. But it’s never too early to start shopping for Fallout 4 holiday gifts.)
