Super Smash Bros Cloud Strife Moveset Trailer Analysis

November 16, 2015 by Ryan Parreno

It looks like Cloud brought his limit breaks with him, though this raises questions about his Final Smash.

Excited about Cloud Strife’s upcoming appearance in Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS? You will want to see this for sure.

One of Smash developer Sakurai’s nice touch when making trailers is he crams in a lot of details in them. This does not just include sight gags, but actual previews of character movesets. With this in mind, YouTuber MasterofHyrule has made a trailer analysis and broken down the moves revealed in the trailer. Much of this is speculative, but tilts and smash moves are fairly easy to spot visually so these should be mostly accurate.

Rather than run down every move, I’ll point out some highlights:

Cloud’s default strike is a three part combo, two kicks ending with a sword slash. Is it as fast as Zero Suit Samus’ literal one frame punch? The moves do seem to chain faster than any other characters’ combo.

Cloud’s limit break seems to have been incorporated into his moveset. Our source speculates down special charges the meter, and most if not all moves with a fully charged meter were revealed in the trailer too as limit breaks.

His Final Smash is the level 4 limit break, Omnislash. Does this mean Cloud needs to charge to be able to activate his Final Smash? We should learn soon enough

Most  of cloud’s moves are typical sword attacks. In contrast to say, Lucina’s rapier, Cloud chops and cleaves towards his opponents. His sword also has heft, but isn’t unwieldily long. As a result, he can make small, quick, powerful strikes. He doesn’t have the range or versatility Shulk has with the Monado, but the charge mechanic gives him more control over his variant movesets compared to Shulk or Robin.

What do you think of Cloud’s Super Smash Bros for Wii U and 3DS moveset so far? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
