World of Warcraft Subscription Numbers Will No Longer Be Divulged

After its most recent subscriber count from Blizzard Entertainment of 5.5 million subscribers, the MMO-developer has announced in an earnings call that it will no longer be reporting World of Warcraft’s subscription numbers.

"Note that this is the last quarter that we plan to provide subscriber numbers," Blizzard said. "There are other metrics that are better indicators of the overall Blizzard business performance."

The company says it will be using “engagement” metrics when discussing World of Warcraft’s current level of success. Those specific metrics were not disclosed in the earnings call. The most recent subscription number of 5.5 million is as of Sept. 30.

Currently, World of Warcraft is on its fifth expansion pack, Warlords of Draenor, which saw the release of patch 6.2 on June 23. Patch 6.2.2, which introduced flying in the game’s most recent continent, Draenor, was released on Sept. 1.

The game’s next expansion pack, Legion, was announced in early August. Among the additions it will bring to the game are a new hero class, the demon hunter, and a new continent The Broken Isles. Speaking at DragonCon, senior game designer Jonathan LeCraft revealed a few tidbits of information on Legion, including that class specializations will be overhauled in an attempt to dehomogenize the classes in the game. Legion will be on-hand at this weekend’s BlizzCon, a convention dedicated to all Blizzard games.
